Sarkisian's UW honeymoon over

Every dog is supposed to have his day. But if Steve Sarkisian is expecting to catch a break any time soon, he might want to break out a crossword puzzle to keep him busy while he waits. Since being hired as head football coach at the University of Washington, the former USC offensive coordinator has been tested at every level as he tries to rebuild the program. In fact, the past two months have been a series of setbacks and ego checks for the Huskies' supposed savior. Scrambling to keep a recruiting class intact after the coaching change, Sarkisian signed 18 newcomers and gave himself a "C" for the effort, telling the Seattle Times that the class was "average." The group was ranked as one of the worst in the Pac-10 by the major recruiting services and featured just two players from the state of Washington. While it's unfair to expect a coach to make recruiting inroads in just two months, if you can't sell someone on spending four years of his life in Seattle instead of Pullman or Corvallis, you might not be the best salesman. In the words of Dave Chappelle, "Life is way harder than that." More troubling for Sarkisian, however, are the two recruiting violations that came to light in the past month. Both were secondary violations and won't warrant much punishment, but they were bad publicity for a new coach whose school is still sporting a sizable black eye from last season. Using a fog machine for recruits on an official visit and meeting with a recruit in the presence of a journalist aren't exactly Cardinal sins, but they were both bizarre moves by Sarkisian given that they violate fairly common rules. Every coach has to take an excruciatingly in-depth test about NCAA recruiting regulations, so how did some of the simplest rules slip his mind? It's like passing a test on quantum physics and then forgetting how gravity works.

Talk about an article with a whole lotta nothin

Whooopeeee!

But, with his quarterback back, it's likely he will win at least one Pac-10 game. I give him four and a 7-4 season...about the same as Lame Kitten.

Agree.

Find it odd that two ex-USC coaches, Kiffin's and Sark, both seem to regularly break the "little" rules in recruiting. Either way, neither are Norm Chow or Carroll.

February 25, 2009  11:09 AM ET

Even with his 2 violations, UW should just be happy Sark hasn't been chewing on his foot like Kiffin...yet anyhow.

How freakin' dare you lump the greatest coach in NCAA (perhaps all of football, no wait, all of sport) with this lame excuse of a coach. Lane Kiffin is the single greatest coaching mind - EVER!

Apologize now, or be smitten by the Kitten!

Well - for Washington folks - maybe they think Sark is better than than UCLA coach who gambled in some Office March Madness pool and perhaps a fog machine rule is kind of petty....

Plus - I think EVERYONE needs to remember - the REAL GAME is played on the field! Let's give the guy a couple seasons to really prove himself - THEN we can say our piece. All this "Commentary" based on zero football games played proves "Zero"! Nothing....

Give coaches some time - the "WIN NOW" mentality will not work for MOST colleges! Good things take time and I personally Feel that Sark (and maybe his even Buddy Kiffin at Tennessee will have "good" first years).... And in Washington's case - they are hungry for a Win! IF they win 3 or 4 - that will be better than 2008! Anything more - watch out.... let's all be patient and let a couple of seasons of football games play out.

Instead of articles like this dribble, why not report on how the Reggie Bush story is progressing and when he'll be in San Quentin? Ooops, I forgot.. Carroll and USC are the untouchables, and the west coast sports writer's can't investigate, or they won't be allowed on the sidelines are at the Trojan parties... my bad.

I agree whole-heartedly. Steve Sarkisian & Lane Kiffin are the two most undeserving Division I football coaches of all time.

Everything is attracted to, and pulled toward Lane Kiffin by an invisible force.

I'm glad he's testing the waters at Washington. Recruiting violations or not, the program is in trouble and he can't do much worse than what's been handed to him. Season opener is LSU at Husky Stadium. We'll see.
