Schiano shakes up Rutgers staff

For the second straight year, Rutgers football has undergone a major staff shakeup. The difference this time is that head coach Greg Schiano has promoted from within, naming Kirk Ciarrocca (wide receivers) and Kyle Flood (offensive line, run game coordinator) as co-offensive coordinators on Tuesday. In a surprising concurrent announcement, Schiano also relinquished his added responsibilities as defensive coordinator he has held since 2005, elevating Bob Fraser (linebackers) and Ed Pinkham (secondary) to co-defensive coordinator status.

Co-coordinators??? This seems like an odd move?

February 25, 2009  09:11 AM ET

looks like Schiano might be mad at RU A.D. for not moving the stadium expansion ahead quick enough....so he's saying "I'm not going to carry all the responsibility of this team. I'll let these other coaches do what I was doing." He's only going to 'head coach', whatever that is.

Yea, I have always been perplexed by these moves. Similar to Assistant Head Coaches? You are either the HC or an assistant.

Schiano's last gasps for air, trying to keep a one-and-done program relevant. Ray Rice is long gone, and he ain't coming back. A school like Rutgers won't see a player like that for many more years.

Rutgers will be fine, and maybe Schiano will make the jump somewhere else, like ND if they somehow do not get their dream coach. (remaining unnamed since I should stop bringing it up)

The only real job I worry about him taking is Penn State should it get offered to him. Otherwise, I think he's sticking around for a while. He's started something at Rutgers no one thought they'd ever see and a dude like Ray Rice was a great find...shows he can recruit and spot talent, so that gives hope theres another Ray around the corner.

They live together for insurance purposes. It's complicated.

Wow, talk about sour grapes. Are you, by chance, a Pitt Panthers fan? If so, sorry we keep beating you guys every year. Schiano's one of the best recruiters in the nation, and he showed his commitment to RU by turning down offers from Miami and Michigan. As for never getting a player like Rice again - let's see what De'Antwan Williams can do.

You know Ray Rice was a 3 star kid. That and Jersey produced two top 5 RB's this past year (Knowshown and Donald Brown), so it is very possible for him to get another Rice.

Mmm ... "one and done"? 4 straight bowls, and three straight wins? You can also say PITT won't see another Tony Dorsett for many more years. It's been what, 20, 25 years?

This is why RU needs to leave the Big East - they beat patsies like PITT year after year, yet the BE sends them to third tier bowl games.

Too many chefs can ruin the dish having a 2 headed cordinator staff can only bring trouble and confusion to the players and dissension in the ranks. Players running around saying "well this coach said this while others are saying that coach is saying this.

February 25, 2009  05:33 PM ET

Rutgers was one of the best teams in the bigeast towards the end of the year they got a shot at winning the biggeast this year. Other than their first two bad bad! looses They only lost to @navy by 2 @WV by 6 and @ Cinncinati by 3 then they won 7 straight Rutgers will be fine.
