Hamilton unhappy coming off Pistons bench

07:46 AM ET 02.26 | Rip Hamilton is trying to be the good soldier. He became the sixth man -- although he opposed it -- because he was told it would help the team. But after the Pistons fell to 4-12 with him coming off the bench after Wednesday night's 90-87 loss to the Hornets, he let everyone know that he doesn't think it's working. "The way we've been starting, is the way (Pistons coach Michael Curry) wants it," said Hamilton, who scored 24 points. "I've said I'm happy to come off the bench as long as we're winning. But we're losing. "Something's got to give. I'm all for doing whatever it takes for the team, but coming off the bench with us not winning, something's got to change." And Wednesday night's performance favored his argument. Allen Iverson, who likely would go to the bench if Hamilton were to return to the starting lineup, left with a stiff back 8 minutes into Wednesday's game and didn't return.

AI has a sore back, this is the chance for Curry to prove to AI that he is no longer a starter. If we were a legit contender, I would say AI should come the bench to play with the scrubs, thats what he has done his entire career.

We are not a legit contender. Release AI early, and let Stuckey develop.

The only reason Rip comes off the bench instead of AI is that Curry didnt want to deal with AI complaining about being benched. I think its safe to say Curry has earned the leverage to send AI to the bench, if he doesnt like it, release him. He is hurting the development of our young point.

How does a kid learn to play the point when someone else always has the ball?

I've always thought Rip needs to be starting... Now that he (probably) will be, maybe they can start winning some games. Iverson will destroy any reserve SGs in the league not named Manu Ginobili (although Many will still have trouble guarding him).

Exactly. Put AI on the floor with 4 ?'s, not an established winning starting 5...

Let the established starting 5 win the way they know, let AI win the way he knows.

I would love to see Rip Hamilton in a Bulls jersey.

Correction: Rip is unhappy with LOSING! Coming off the bench is less of a problem for him. The headline makes him sound like an ego-driven head case.

February 26, 2009  08:24 AM ET

I never thought that I would say it but... let Iverson come off the bench. Let him play with attitude of "let me show you" instead of "I am the man". He has playe din this league for quite some time and has deserved all he has gotten but he no longer can carry a team on his back. He too, just like Marbury, can only contribute. These guys are breaking down, they have been great for some time but no longer have the ability to push it to the limit.

Good point!

A.I. comming off the bench, man you think Rip is complaining, just wait till someone sticks a mic in A.I.'s direction. A.I.'s ego will never allow him to come off the bench, even if it ment winning some games.

Practice?!?! MAN!? We talking 'bout PRACTICE?

It was a dumb trade in the first place. AI and Rip have the same position. They are both shooting guards except Rip depends on somebody setting him up and AI ballhogs the ball. Just plain dumb. Of course Rip is pissed. The organization basically gave up on him and put him up on a shelf.

February 26, 2009  09:00 AM ET

he should join Billups in denver

February 26, 2009  09:15 AM ET

Blow it up and start fresh...that's what they really need to do. It's obvious that these group of guys just don't put out the effor they once did with the exception of Rip and Tay.

February 26, 2009  09:19 AM ET

Ever since A.I. arrived in Detroit, Stuckey has disappeared! One of the reasons why Detroit traded Chauncy is because Stuckey was playing so well. I have watched a few of Detroits games and A.I. doesn't give anybody else a chance, he has the ball all the time and then he shoots all the time. The only time he passes is when he gets in trouble. Everybody else has to get a rebound to get some garbage shots. A.I. cant just change now, he has been this way his whole career and his teams in philly was designed with scrubs who had no offense so they could,nt complain when he shot all the balls. Why do you think denver traded him, melo and the other nuggets couldn't deal with that!!!!! Free RIP!

February 26, 2009  09:21 AM ET

When AI was in philly i remember thinking i respect this guy because everyone is out to get him just because he doesnt sell out and is good leader and teamate, but i guess he really got hurt when he was traded to denver because i started to see something else a whiny, selfish player trying to play for stats, and now in mo town its even worse because he is being that way at the cost of losing games for his team that is the ultimate selfishness, if i were a piston's fan or GM he needs to pack his S*** AND GET OUT!!! RIP HAS NOT EARNED A STARTING JOB WITH HIS PRODUCTION BUT ALSO WITH HIS UNSELFISHNESS.....

never in a million years.

Should we go back to the 3 guard scheme? 4-12 running a big lineup not so promising, seasons over anyways just let the guards score their points and restructure the team a little bit this summer. I'd say one summer is pretty quick rebuilding process

February 26, 2009  09:30 AM ET

A.I minus the answer hates to practice so you know he was not coming off of the bench.
Hamilton should demand a trade if he is unhappy am sure other teams could use the maskman flopper!

February 26, 2009  09:31 AM ET

PS: The pistons seem to be down that road to lose up to ten straight games!
Ha ha ha!

February 26, 2009  09:39 AM ET

Detroit's problem is real simple. Bad Head Coach. How do you turn over a veteran team to a coach with only 1 year as an assistant in Detroit. For all that Carlisle, Brown, and Saunders didn't do, they did not lose like this team. Curry was not the answer for the coaching position.

That being said I agree that they need to blow this team up and start fresh and look at 2010 to be the jump off point to get back into the playoffs. They need help at so many positions it is ridiculous. Let AI and Sheed go this summer, cut Kwame, move McDyss to the 4, draft a young center, and sign a decent big to play center while your rookie center gets his feet wet. Sign a big free agent in the summer of 2010 and you are set to go.

Everything goes in cycles and this team with Billups wasn't going to win it all because we can't beat Boston (nobody to cancel out KG). I agree with the trade because it was made of the long term good of the franchise. Bench AI, put Rip in the lineup and they will win some more games. Rip has been a good guy about it will still be a cornerstone for the franchise for the next 3-4 years since he just signed a new deal at the beginning of the season. Future is still bright with Stuckey, Tay, Rip and $34 million in cap space plus their role players like Maxiell, Affalo and Amir.
