Michigan recruiting dips into Ohio

Traditionally, Michigan's recruiting plan begins with in-state players, then targeting the state of Ohio's top talent. No other state, besides Michigan, has produced more Wolverines than the Buckeye State and two of U-M's three Heisman Trophy winners are from there. Ohio has long been considered one of the top football talent producing states in the country, but the last couple years have seen a drop off in the talent. That changes in the class of 2010. Ohio's talent pool is once again deep. Ten Ohioans have scholarship offers from U-M, including Canton South wide receiver Jerald Robinson (6-foot-2, 175 pounds). On Feb. 9, he was the Wolverines' third verbal commitment of the 2010 class. Two of the other nine prospects with Michigan offers have made commitments elsewhere. Lakota West's Alex Smith said he wants to go to Cincinnati and Youngstown Ursuline's Jamel Turner has pledged to Ohio State.

February 26, 2009  10:37 AM ET

That SOB RR is only picking up players that no one wants.

thunderdragon...get a live you pathetic sack of trash - you're secretly Ron English and are just bitter that you didn't get the job obviously

February 26, 2009  10:53 AM ET

Anyone remember all the hype around RON ENGLISH being the next big thing and then michigans defenses were horrible there after. Then Ron goes to remake himself at louisville and they were horrible. I dont see him being very sucessful at eastern michigan. Im not rooting agianst the guys but he is overhyped.

Let's be honest. Who would be successful at Eastern Michigan their first two years?

Go away little man. We'll let you know when there's a basketball story that you can add your two cents.

Look "buddy"...I grew up a SoCal boy, and have been an SC fan my whole life...my relocation changes nothing...SC will have 4 1st rounders this year...How many will Michigan have? Will their total number of players drafted even equal the number of wins they had last year? Seeing how they only won 3 games it shouldn't be too difficult to match. Oh, and what does the record books say about what year it was the last time Michigan won a big bowl game?

I like Big Ten ball. This thread is choked with smack talk. Please, raise your game.

If you mean a BCS bowl then it's been a few years. In 2008, beat Florida in the Capital One Bowl. That was a pretty good win considering Florida was favored by 11.

Your point is well taken. Michigan will have 3 or 4 people drafted this year. In the prior year, Michigan had 6 or 7 people drafted and I think 4 of those were in the first 3 rounds including the #1 pick.

This does not compare to USC where Pete Carroll loads up every year. He is the best recruiter and motivator in the country. Too bad they keep losing to a scub team every year or they may have a couple of more national championships.

USC is at the top. Other than Florda, no program can even hold a candle to them. USC has been doing it longer than Florida as well with Carroll.

This is where Michigan wants to be and any sane Michigan fan will admit that. I am a Michigan fan and I am hoping Rich Rodriguez can at least get us in that neighborhood and consistently ahead of OSU.

Well put...The conference losses are frustrating...The real problem with both Pac 10 and Big 10 football is the way the conferences are perceived. Granted UW and WSU were possibly the two worst BCS teams in the nation last year, I wouldn't categorize Oregon State as a true "scrub" team. However, seeing how they get creamed on the road by Penn State and also beaten by Utah (though in hindsight, that loss wasn't all that bad) it's tough to make an argument against that thought. And of course the loss to Standford 2 years ago...well there is no defense. Hopefully the Pac 10 will start winning some of their tough non-confernce games and build a better rep.

Yeah this story is a whole lot of nothing. A lot of great Michigan players came from Ohio. Desmond Howard, anyone?
