07:43 AM ET 02.26 | Free-agent pitcher Pedro Martinez is staying busy. The three-time Cy Young Award winner threw a simulated game on Tuesday in the Dominican Republic and is on track to start for the country's World Baseball Classic squad in the team's first exhibition game on March 3, according to the Dominican newspaper Hoy. According to the report, Martinez's velocity ranged from 88-92 mph in the 43-pitch outing at Baseball City, a sports complex near Boca Chica. The Dodgers, Pirates and Indians are interested in signing Martinez, but the right-hander has not received an official offer, according to the newspaper.

It's almost sad the way one of the greatest pitchers of the last 50 years career is ending. I don't have a problem with him trying to get a job, but for a pitcher like Pedro to end his career in Pittsburgh, playing in front of literally dozens of people, doesn't seem right.

Bet he can still take Don Zimmer though.

Please, God, let him go to the Indians and start number three in the rotation right behind Pavano. I would kill to have that kinda ammo on Slink.

He'd either be number four (behind Pavano) or number three behind Carmona (with Pavano in the pen).

He also could be a 'plan'B in case Jake Westbrook can't make it back any time soon (or ever, God forbid)

Maybe you do what most teams are doing this year. Give him a million or two base and load up on incentives, because chances are he's just not going to be very durable. Not a bad fit for LA as they really need pitching and lets face it, nothings going to help the Pirates.

no matter what he'll be overpaid for the number of loses and injury time

February 26, 2009  08:49 AM ET

He'll sign with whichever team offers him the largest stipend for curl activator. Rockin' the jheri curl this long takes time, effort AND money ...

Hey "Original Tony" - Actually, back in the day when Pedro was a Dodger in the NL he would go head hunting and receive his fair share of plunks back when he got in the batters box. At this point in his career he tops out in the low 90's and has been trying to get healthy and prove he can win games. He has to be more of a finesse guy now that he no longer can blow 98 mph heaters by guys. Try looking into baseball history before 2002 before you take a swipe at one of the baseball's greatest pitchers.

I think Pedro would be more like a plan "C," as in "Call down to Huntington Park and get us a pitcher up here before we ever have to start this washed-up Dominican leprechaun again ..."

He's just another roid boy. He's another pathetic loser. Bring it on with your 88mph fastball. LOL

The Irish half of is offended by even the thought of a Dominican leprechaun. Somehow the idea of a pot of rice and beans at the end of the rainbow does not hold much appeal.

Let him stay with the Mets so Howard and Utley and Rollins can hit homers off him and watch the Mets choke again this year

Well, actually I don't think they really have set numbers 4-5 until Westbrook returns.

While there are a lot of questions marks with their rotation, they're hedging their bets with depth.

Assuming they can get 200 innings each out of Lee and Carmona, they'll only need to average about 70 innings from Westbrook, Reyes, Laffey, Huff, Sowers, Jackson, Lewis and Pavano to fill up the season. Add Pedro to the fold and the average drops to 64.

The situation is not ideal, but with the financial model they work with, I think Shapiro has done a good job.

can he even still play?

I guess your name is supposes to be ironic. I'm a Yankee fan and frankly I dont think Pedro would ever touch the stuff. I think he prided himself on being the one guy who strike out all those juice-heads. Simply put, he is the closet thing to Koufax his generation or the next generation will ever see. Don't ya think he'd be Hgh-ing it up now so he could get a job instead of auditioning for one..?

Since Pedro went to the national league it's been all down hill for him. The little worm is afraid to throw at batters now that he actually has to get in the batter's box.

pedro had a good 07 season with the mets, hardly down hill. 08 was downhill. he played for the dodgers to start his career, might be fitting to end it there. his reason for the drop off is 17 seasons in the bigs, it has nothing to do with facing other pitchers.

That's an ignorant comment. To quote Billy Wagner when asked about Pedro's conditioning a few years back: "Have you SEEN Pedro's body?" He was never a roid boy and c'mon, innocent until proven guilty for guys like this, please. If you can spot an 88 mph fastball where it needs to be, you can be effective. Have you ever even HEARD of Jamie Moyer? Tops 80-frickin'-3 on the radar gun.

What's not fitting is that somehow your avatar is more disturbing then the one one comment #18. There's something just not human about that guy.
