St.-Pierre camp fires back at Penn

10:53 AM ET 02.28 | The team for Georges St. Pierre has fired back with a response to the NSAC against the allegation's from BJ Penn that the GSP Camp cheated during their UFC 94 bout by applying excess vaseline to the UFC welterweight champions body in between rounds. In the letter, Camp St. Pierre says they "vehemently deny any allegation as to the intentional and illegal use of 'grease' for Georges' benefit during UFC 94." The statement goes on in great detail, with supporting letters from St. Pierre's coaches, that it was his skill and training that made him the better fighter over Penn that night, not the application of Vaseline. The controversy stems from cornerman Phil Nurse being seen between rounds using his hands to apply Vaseline to St. Pierre's face then placing them on the welterweight champion's chest and back. Penn's camp has alleged since the incident that the application of the Vaseline was done intentionally as to give St. Pierre an advantage over the Hawaiian, thus negating his guard game on the ground. The filing by Camp St. Pierre talks in great detail about the breathing technique used by Mr. Friend that was implemented by Phil Nurse during the fight, and how this technique has been used in previous MMA fights, by other fighters as well.

This may be a stupid question but here gooes. What does a breathing technique and vaseline have to do with each other especially since you know the vaseline is illegal? I still think GSP would have won the fight but this just makes him look bad.

vaseline was not a factor. penn got beat down. nurse is an idiot and deserves to be suspended and i would argue that gsp does because it is still cheating. i hope gsp comes out and dominates next fight to legitimize everything

I agree Vaseline is not a factor at all. But Phil Nurse should never enter the octagon again ever. I'm glad Dana white hates this guy also.
The guy can make a mistake like that after doing this as a living. I wonder if surgeons can go in there oops I forgot about this. There will be lots of lawsuits and lots of hearing, nobody is going to forget about it.
GSP is also a idiot, he should just fired nurse and put the blame on him. What purpose about this response. "I work hard", yes but phil nurse did something wrong in your corner. He's part of your team. Blame it on yourself for hiring a Phil Nurse.

Agreed GSP should be suspended and Nurse should be banned from the UFC. If you do something as your profession to make a living, how can you overlook something so blatant. Also GSP's excuse that Nurse has been doing this in all his other fights (most of which probably ended in a victory) is NOT an excuse but makes the whole thing look worse.
No one can say 100% that Vaseline had no effect at all, I mean it was removed after the 3rd round when GSP had already beat Penn up, which would mean the if the Vaseline played a roll it's damage had already been done.

still on this????? if penn was as committed and dedicated in his training as he is in making excuses for losses or overexaggerating non-issues he would be as good if not better than GSP, 2 bad he is not if I would be Dana or GSP I would give Penn a third fight and then whoop his A55 just to shut him up for good like Tito Ortiz did to Shamrock....

GSP has to give Baby Jay another beat down so this can finally be over. Baby Jay says he can't fight Ken flo at ufc 100 because he's not ready to fight. Baby jay is so dedicated to making excuses and whining that he forgets to train on some cardio. Sounds like the "great" BJ is afraid to lose his belt to Ken flo. He had no business fighting for the 170 pound title anyway. he hasnt won a welterweight fight in how long

Get over it newbie - GSP is not going to be suspended - he makes way too much money for Don King, opps I mean Dana White: any inference that they are one and the same is purely intentional - any extra veseline applied to either fighter would be to the detriment of BOTH fighters, a fact that GSP haters continue to forget

The reason the breathing technique was mentioned was because it involves the trainer placing some force with his hands on the fighters chest and back.
Anyways, I really wish BJ Penn had at least a little bit of class, and would just drop this whole charade. Everyone in the MMA World knows that he lost, and he lost badly. The vaseline may have played a part in the first 2 rounds (the only time it was alleged to have been applied), and after that, BJ still couldn't get a grip. By the way Vaseline smears away from a fighter over the course of a round. With sweat and friction, after 5 minutes are up, it's all gone. One of my friends fights here locally in MMA, and had one fight in TKO. He was nice enough to allow myself and another friend in his corner for the TKO fight, and after the first round, all the vaseline on his face was gone. Same thing after the second round. He ended up tapping out early in the third round.

how was the vaseline be applied in the first round. isn't the nsac watching the pre fight intros. why would he need the breathing technique be needed for the first. Thats why i think the vaseline was only applied during the second round only. the nsac checks fighters before they enter the cage.

Before the actual fight starts, both corners talk to their opponents, and perform pre-fight rituals or exercises. They still watch as this is being done. You are right though, in the first round, it is very doubtful that St. Pierre was greased as has been mentioned. Also, according to Dana White, the vaseline incident was brought to light between rounds 1 and 2, and was prevented during the break between rounds 2 and 3. So, one round of "greasing", which couldn't have been a ton of vaseline, as the Friends hands were only on St. Pierre's chest and upper back (nowhere near where Penn was trying to apply his guard). Anyhow, what I'm really trying to say is, stop the bickering, the fight is over. What's done is done. The result will not change.
BJ Penn, I hope by some grace of god that you read this.
You are a good fighter. You have a solid ground game, and good punching power. You lost to an opponent of higher calibre than yourself, in every respect and facet of MMA. It's ok. People can't win forever. GSP will lose fights later on in his career, as will Silva and Fedor. Deal with it!

Anyone who watched that show on spike leading up to the fight showing both train could see B.J. is way to full of hinself and not very dedicated. Honestly I had picked B.J. to win that fight until I watched that show, then quickly changed my tune. B.J. is an unbelievable talent, but just doesnt have the drive. GSP trains like an absolute BEAST.

NO!!!!! If they have a third fight I'm done!! Why would you give B.Job. another fight with GSP when he wont even have the 155 belt. I didnt even care to see the second fight. I knew bj was gonna get smashed. Machida / silva was what i was all about!!

And just one more thing that i wish everybody would realize.......... If GSP had vasoline on him, rolling around on the ground is going to spread it between the two of them. Now their both slippery and guess what....... GSP whooped his a@%! The only way i would pay to watch a third installment is if BJ takes a vasoline bath 1 min before jumping in the cage!! I'd still put my money on Rush!!
