Is USF's Leavitt out of control?
Someone should tell University of South Florida head coach Jim Leavitt that spring football begins in less than two weeks. At some point -- and very soon -- he's going to need to find a defensive coordinator. Leavitt has been trying, without success, to fill the vacancy left by Wally Burnham, who left for the same position at Iowa State two weeks ago. But do you blame Burnham, or other assistants, for bolting from "General" Jim Leavitt's dungeon? Offensive coordinator Greg Gregory and defensive backs coach Troy Douglas have also gone elsewhere, taking the same roles at South Alabama and North Carolina, respectively. That's what happens when a head coach gets out of control. Imagine this: You're an assistant at a decent program like USF, but you get a look from a national power and interview for the job. The next day, you get demoted. That's what Leavitt did to Gregory. Just a couple days after Gregory interviewed for the tight ends job at Florida, Leavitt sent out a statement saying he had been demoted. He claimed he didn't want his assistants sniffing around for jobs at other schools.

What a hypocrite! He sniffed the Bama job twice. Maybe he should demote himself.

Well, this is the beginning of the end. This jerk will run off any good coaching talent. Soon after that, the playing talent will follow suit. I hope you USF fans enjoyed your 15 minutes of fame. Thanks JL!

Woolard (The AD) needs to cut "the Jim" off at the knees and take charge of the program. If he doesn't Woolard needs to be fired along with Leavitt.

This is a shame. What Jim Leavitt has done at USF is remarkable. 15 years ago, USF was the largest university in the country without a football team. Now they are a formidable D-1 program. You should expect, and encourage, your assistants to get offers of job promotions from other schools. It's the mark of a good program and, IMO, the highest compliment a head coach can receive.
However, when your assistants start making LATERAL moves, that's the sign of a program that has problems. USF will be fine in the long-run though. It sits in the middle of one of the most talent-rich states in the nation for HS players.

Someone needs to give him some downers, or hide his chocolate. He might be alittle ADHD. You guys are right he is at a great school/great location, but if he can't keep an assitant his talent won't come.

When I said that USF would be fine in the long-run, I meant if they were ever to part ways with Leavitt. My point was only that selling USF to a kid shouldn't be TOO difficult. There's no reason they can't be a consistent Top 25 team.

I have talked to a few ex USF players and they love the guy, but that won't be worth much if he has no good coaches to help the kids get better. USF should still be attractive if Leavitt gets fired because of its location and playing in a BCS conference. But there is the possibility that USF's prestige goes down as he runs off his coaches and that the Big East looses it's automatic BCS bid if it keeps going the way it has been lately. Then there is no difference between USF and UCF.
