Bob Knight incites Cal fans

Bob Knight, the former Army coach, turned Indiana coach, turned Texas Tech coach, turned ESPN analyst, took his precious 1st Amendment rights to California's Haas Pavilion for Saturday's game between the Golden Bears and UCLA's Bruins. Any game involving Knight ultimately has to be about him, and so this one was, and it was terrific theater. Knight, a career disobedient, took lawlessness to the edge when he sported that fire-engine red pullover, roughly the hue favored by archrival Stanford, into a blue-and-gold Berkeley arena. Cal fans were so busy razzing Knight -- "Take off that red shirt!" -- they obviously didn't have enough energy left to distract UCLA into defeat.

March 2, 2009  10:36 AM ET

Way to go Bobby.

March 2, 2009  11:11 AM ET

Is this from the Los Angeles Times or the National Enquirer?

Bobby Knight is The Man and will go down as the all time best basketball coach in college history...Wooden who? Of course he is from Ohio, Orrville to be precise, and all great people come from there!

March 2, 2009  01:32 PM ET

Cal fans are jerks. Should have paid more attention to the game than someone there to cover it.

Also, Bobby rocks! Always has. Always will.

IU Grad and Bobby supporter.

Is this the ESPN website by mistake?? "Bob Knight, the former Army coach, turned Indiana coach, turned Texas Tech coach, turned ESPN analyst, took his precious 1st Amendment rights to California's Haas Pavilion for Saturday's game between the Golden Bears and UCLA's Bruins. Any game involving Knight ultimately has to be about him, and so this one was, and it was terrific theater. Gee whiz, is there any wonder print is dying with bullsh*t reporting like this... Are we jealous that he NEVER had to cheat to win, like oh so many Cali teams?? Sounds like you have a ton of issues to discuss with your therapist...

March 2, 2009  04:12 PM ET

coach knight is ridiculous. im so glad he stopped coaching, go choke your chicken, knight

March 2, 2009  04:24 PM ET

It sounds like he wore a neutral color to game involving not Stanford, but Cal and UCLA. Berkeley = liberal = whiny ****.

March 2, 2009  04:25 PM ET

The end of my last sentence should read "= ghey"

March 2, 2009  07:07 PM ET

Wearing a red shirt into a building constitutes "taking lawlessness to the edge"? What was it, a Crips hangout?

March 2, 2009  08:41 PM ET

For all of Bobby Knight's accomplishments and knowledge of the game, he will alway be remembered more for his shaningans and foot-in-the-mouth comments. I'm shocked the CAL students didn't hurl a chair at him.

Here is the live ending from a fans perspective at WSU's recent upset over #11ASU. You can only see the lower bowl of beasley coliseum. WSU has the largest student seating section allotment in the nation (45.83 percent of the 11,722 seats in the coliseum). It was senior night ....10 seconds left...

Is wearing a red sweater really "inciting" fans? Did he tell students he was wearing red because "Stanford is really awesome and other stuff..." Come on, you get paid to write this crap. I don't, and admittedly write crap. So please, write something worth reading.

March 2, 2009  10:02 PM ET

Knight knows a hell of a lot about basketball but he will always be remembered for being over the top and an abrasive person.

And neither he nor any other coach in college sports will EVER have ANYTHING over John R. Wooden

March 2, 2009  10:11 PM ET

when you hear the expression "cal" basketball, isn't your first impression "memphis"? until you get a basketball team, what's wrong with using a basketball legend to put some fans in the seats?

March 2, 2009  11:20 PM ET

This was by far the DUMBEST story ever written. I'll never get that 9 seconds back in my life....thanks A LOT LA Times and si.com ..... ****! No wonder the LA Times is going under like that rag the NY Times...both hacks....if the toilet paper runs out, I'd consider using one of these papers---maybe. The quote : "Any game involving Knight ultimately has to be about him..." just goes to show you these punk have it out for one of the greatest coaches of all time. And all they can come up with is--he wore a red sweater...big deal...the students were probably just doing it in jest. These likely arent the tree-hugging liberal idiots outside protesting a football stadium.

and, the quote: "took his precious 1st Amendment rights to California's Haas Pavilion..."....maybe him, or somebody should have used their 2nd Amendment rights on whoever wrote this garbage.
