Former University of Miami football coach Larry Coker, who guided the Hurricanes to the 2001 BCS national championship, will be introduced as UTSA's first coach Friday, a source said Wednesday night. UTSA athletic director Lynn Hickey and her staff recommended Coker, who was fired from Miami in 2006, for the job earlier Wednesday in a meeting with school President Ricardo Romo. Neither Hickey or Romo could be reached for comment.

What the hell and where the hell is UTSA?

March 5, 2009  07:44 AM ET

Univ of Texas, San Antonio. I think the school's first football team will be in 2010 or 2011.

March 5, 2009  08:12 AM ET

Good for that program but what a drop from Miami to them!

March 5, 2009  08:16 AM ET

Coker is a good coach to guide them through an infancy.

March 5, 2009  09:57 AM ET

Miami coaches are usually very capable and experts at turning around new or disfunctional programs.

UTSA is the University of Texas at San Antonio, not even half the academic institution of the University of Texas at Austin. Austin is like the Berkeley of the University of California programs.

Miami Coaches
- Howard Schnellenberger coach at Florida Atlantic (first coach ever)
- Dennis Erickson turnaround coach of Idaho and Oregon State, now ASU coach
- Butch Davis restoring UNC Chapel Hill after they fell, Mack Brown had elevated that program
- Larry **** first coach at UTSA

If you notice, they all have a successful history. Dennis Erickson started that success of former U of Miami coaches. Of course, Jimmy Johnson did something in the pros.

and that's Larry Coker....whom I never thought should have been fired at U of Miami

hahahahahaah oohhh man that is one of the funniest jokes I have heard here!
Just watch this years NFL draft THEN think about that comment.
The guy had no clue about recruiting and was a horrible gameday coach
His 1 NC was almost gimmies, that 2001 team just needed a coach to get out of the way. And when we needed coaching for 2002 team he was clearly outcoached by the same sweater vest wearing coach Urban Myer, Les Miles and every other SEC school outcoached.

March 5, 2009  10:25 AM ET

Yawn.

March 5, 2009  10:54 AM ET

Right on point, u grad - Coker's a great guy but he's a coordinator at best - and maybe a good infancy team coach - we'll see. But he ruined the 'Canes after winning with Butch's recruits.

March 5, 2009  10:55 AM ET

At first glance I thought it said USTA, which is the US Tennis Association. Now that would be an interesting new position for Coker.

Didn't Howard Schnellenberger precede Dennis Erickson? Was it not Schnellenberger that built the program and guided it to success and notoriety?

March 5, 2009  01:53 PM ET

By the preponderance of evidence, Coker is a fine man. I wish him well.

San Antonio is a fine town. A close second to Austin among my favorite cities in Texas.

Schnellenberger begat, Johnson, who begat Erickson, who begat NCAA butt kicking, who begat Davis, who begat Coker, who begat Shannon.

So saith the PSALM

March 5, 2009  02:44 PM ET

His commute to work won't be that bad. There's several retirement communities that have sprung up just north of San Antonio.

Oh goody, now he can suck a fledgeling team that hasnt played a snap, into the 9th level of hell just like he did at Miami. To man, you have to be a pretty inept and incompetent coach if you fail at "Da U". Given, the top recruiting state in the nation for BCS athletes, combined with the draw of an elite program: anybody that fails at Miami should be given the "coaching death sentence" in NCAA ball. I mean really. The last guy that failed so utterly, is George W. Bush. W took a Gazillion Dollars in surplass and drove us into Trillions in deficit. we are borrowing money from China, for pete's sake!!! Good luck Coker! This will be UTSA's first learning curve on what kind of coach TO NOT HIRE!!!

Yeah and we all see how well Obama is doing. The stock market just loves him and his "change" ideas.

You're right KingFootball. Bush was brilliant. My apologies for offending the candidate you so wisely voted for. LMAO

Nobody said he was brilliant but their is enough blame on both sides of the aisle for the economic turmoil. In my opinion, raising taxes on the successful people won't stimulate the economy. The private sector will do that. That is wealth distribution. That is Socialism.

You just keep bowing to Pelosi though.

Hey my extra 13 bucks a week will stimulate the economy LOL!
To borrow from Will Ferrel SNL skit
"I would be myself and this great country a great disservice if I did not spend the hell out of my $13 "tax cut"!

I unfortunatley do not make the required 250k+ a year salary but hope to one day and taking additional taxes from people, regardless of income, on the eve of a possible 2nd depression is downright retarded. Just ask yourself this question, how does taxing the wealthy more better my life? IT DOESN'T but it does give the government (repubs and dems the same ) more money to spend for a $886,000 36 hole disc golf course.
