10:36 AM ET 03.06 | This year's MLS Cup will be held at Seattle's Qwest Field on Nov. 22, CLS has learned. Other outlets have been predicting for weeks that Seattle was the frontrunner, but a source confirmed to CLS late on Thursday that the decision has been made for the game to be held in the Emerald City. This marks the second year in a row that a West Coast venue has been chosen to host the match, after Los Angeles hosted the 2008 edition. Washington, D.C.'s RFK Stadium was the site of the 2007 final. 2009 will also mark the first time that an expansion team has been awarded MLS' showpiece game.

I really hate the idea of playing the marquee game of MLS on artificial turf. Having turf in Seattle is just unacceptable. I am surprised that the well-respected ownership group would allow that. And I am just as surprised MLS would allow it for a championship game. This league is starting to become a joke, much to my dissappointment. I've been watching since it started in '96 and things like this just baffle me.

Was the Soccer Bowl in 1977 (Pele's last official match) the last time Seattle hosted a final?

Have you ever played on that crap? Its hard to get under the ball to create the right spin and delivery--in fact I've hurt my foot before kicking the "ground with no give." Also, don't bother even thinking about a slide tackle--can you say severe RUG BURN. That artificial turf crap needs to be banned from the game as well before it ends more players careers. Stop and plant the wrong way and kiss your knees and ankles good by... There is just no give to that lethal garbage they call "artificial turf." Its a crime anyone plays on it.

True enough, at least the older stuff. While I hate any type of artificial surface, I assume this is the new beest-quality field turf. It's not grass by any means, but it's not nearly as awful as the old plastic.

Boring.

Wow, American's don't even play football on real grass hahahahaa!!!!!

Plastic fans opinions mean little....

you will find, bar BMO, that every field that MLS sides play on astro are in fact amer. football stadiums.... besides BMO, all SSS fields have actual turf.... perhaps you should get your facts straight

Perhaps I don't want to.

Astro turf fits perfectly with the American fake football. I MEAN THEY CAN'T EVEN USE PROPER GRASS?!?!?!

March 6, 2009  12:17 PM ET

i dont like this idea... unless they place actual turf down for the game.... basically i never liked the idea of MLS sides playing with amer. football fields, let alone having the MLS cup in them....

i think MLS NEED to support the teams who have taken the initiative and actually built the SSS... they need to reward them for investing in the league, rather then paying rent at an over-sized facility

with fake football, real grass turns into a cost factor.... do you realize how much it would cost to maintain a field for a NFL team who practices and plays on the field?? the field would be torn up... so thats why a decent number play with astro, simply b/c its cheaper to maintain.... some teams actually play on grass.... either way, i dont like the astro.... especially for soccer, mainly for the reasons d-wreck pointed out...

Alright, you're back to being a le coq and ballz again. I thought we were making progress for just a second there because of your more thoughtful England NT midfield post. Remember to take the dilznick out of your pusshole before posting so your not such a crotchity bizzlbeatch. Gedets me?

That about sums it up.

Qwest field has Field Turf, not Astroturf. Here in Seattle in November the rain and lack of sunshine would make it very hard (and expensive!) to maintain a natural turf field. I was on the field last night (I'm in the Sound Wave - the Sounders have a band!) doing a sound check and the field is ready to go. It looks great with all of the NFL markings removed. Can't wait until March 19!

March 6, 2009  02:33 PM ET

field turf may be an upgrade from astro, but still isnt great...i play futsal on field turf, its not bad, but there are still negatives... the ball still does not spin correctly... sometimes your cleat gets caught and can cause damage (whether minor or major, its never good).... the ball skips off it differently then actual turf...

saying that i agree with Tromboneone.... and thats why i pointed out the cost factor in an above post... financially speaking, its easier to maintain fieldturf....

March 6, 2009  02:41 PM ET

Field Turf sucks.......... It isn't as bad as the original astro-turf, but still, not the best option for football.

I hope this doesn't bother a potential big European club from coming over for one of their tune-ups. I would love to see MLS All-Stars take on Inter, but with potential injuries due to field turf- we won't see Ibrahimovic play too much.

Maybe at least a drunken Sounders fan will jump the field and b-slap Jose. That would be good entertainment!

March 6, 2009  03:00 PM ET

its been pretty much confirmed that it'll Valencia AND its being held in SLC .... Rio is actual turf i think

March 6, 2009  03:01 PM ET

rhussmann- MLS All-star game is in SLC, MLS Cup is claimed to be in Seattle...

Man. I hear that. I broke my right big toe on a free-kick on fake turf. Let's not even talk about the weird pivot forces on your knee when your foot plants and sticks. :( Big *nur* for Seattle.

Pele's last official match was held in Portland, OR not Seattle. At PGE park then know as Civic Stadium.

Back on topic. I've been to a few friendlies at Qwest Filed and they usually lay down real turf over the fake stuff. One should expect them to do this for the MLS cup.

March 6, 2009  06:32 PM ET

Look at of you all jumping to conclusions about the turf field. Qwest Field has been known to lay down the natural turf for big matches (ex. the DCU v Real Madrid match shown in the pic accompanying this article). MLS Cup will likely get the same treatment.
