Bowden may lose ground to Paterno

The NCAA came down on Florida State's athletic program -- in the wake of an academic misconduct scandal -- with a ruling that, barring a successful appeal, will force FSU to vacate as many as seven football wins from the 2007 season. FSU was 7-6 in 2007, a season in which several players who have admitted to being part of the scandal also played. That means at least seven wins are gone from the record books. Bobby Bowden's record was 382-123-4, just one win behind Penn State's Joe Paterno for the all-time lead in Division I-A history.

Bad news for Fisher... Looks like Bowden may hang around an extra couple of years

Losing ground. He is already 32 wins, not 1, behind Joe Paterno. Poppa Bowden's wins at Howard College do not count as far as the record are concerned. Saying they do is just plain stupid.

This is an on going thing at FSU but this time they got busted.

Now dadgummitt Bobby!! Bowden's been crooked for years...what's news here?

Sorry, I missed the part where the NCAA investigated the other 117 D1 schools. I also missed the part where OSU ever surrendered their championship for paying Maurice Clarett- which he admitted. I also missed the Part where USC surrendered their champioships for giving Reggie Bush a house. This is nothing more than NCAA getting FSU back for kicking their butt over the mascott issue.
Forfeiting wins is unprecendented, and I don't care how many kids were involved, it was an online music course. But, since the Pac Ten, Big Ten and Notre Dame can't win on the field, lets try off the field right?

And why wouldn't Bowden's wins at Howard College count? They're wins, aren't they?

The NCAA is out of control. I read the entire detialed report at the NCAA website. This ruling is an absolute joke. It must be nice to play God like the NCAA does. Many of these charges are suspect. I certainly hope FSU stands up to this ridiculous ruling. Someone needs to check the background/history of the members of this sanctioning committee.

OK, I don't know and don't really care about what is or isn't going on a FSU, but when you say "forfeiting wins is unprecendented (sic)" you lose your argument right then and there. Forfeiting wins from past seasons has long been been a tool the NCAA uses to punish programs for misconduct.

A sports agent gave Reggie Bush the house, not USC. And USC may or may not have known about it. FSU contributed directly to the cheating scandal. Big difference.

That's not to say USC won't still get hit, but the double standard you're implying doesn't exactly line up either.

Have you ever contributed ONE thing of value to any thread on this site? All you do on here is spew negativity with ZERO evidence to back up anything you say. I know I'll have to take my lumps over the NCAA sanctions against FSU, but NOT from someone like you.

I suspect the closest you have come to any university is a logo on a T-shirt.

PSU, although a fine institution with a great football coach, has certainly had their share of problems recently, as well. Glass houses, my friend...

Sad, but true.

If this incident has any affect on Coach Bowden's decision to retire, sadly, it will be to hasten his exit.

So, does this mean no bowl games or ACC champ games for the next few years?

Yes, they are wins and they count, dooshbag doesn't know what he's talking about.

Now why did you go and throw my Irish under the bus? I highly doubt you will ever find an academic scandal at ND and we're trying to win on the field. But, that may take some time:)

And just for the record, I don't agree with taking away wins or championships, there are other ways to penalize a program. That being the case, I hope Bobby wins this appeal.

March 7, 2009  12:15 PM ET

Let's call it a tie between Paterno and Bowden and then let them both retire.

Unfortunately, it's "All-Time" wins or "Career" wins. It's not really fair to the rest of the coaches that Jo Pa has been with PS since football was introduced....
