ACC to suffer big NBA exodus

After all the "water was tested" and the individual workout reports filed, the ACC got out of the 2007-08 basketball season with most of its underclass talent intact. Only one player of significance, N.C. State freshman J.J. Hickson, left early for the NBA Draft. Don't bank on the league being so fortunate this year. Although it will be several weeks before the various players officially announce their intentions for the June 25 draft, up to a dozen or more ACC underclassmen are likely to enter the review process. Not all will go the distance. Several will follow the same path that North Carolina's Wayne Ellington, Danny Green and Ty Lawson traveled last spring. Those three declared and went through the NBA workout routine but eventually returned to school.

Talented league with talented players. However it seems this Observer post is a whole lot of nothing.

Lawson will be a high pick-
but those other 2 I don' think will-
they're athletic, but in the NBA - I doubt they'd be anything more
than bottom feeders at the end of the bench for a year or 2
no way do they deserve to be 1st round draft picks
- doesn't mean they can't go overseas & make a nice living-

The article uses the phrase "water-tested" which is so fitting. The NBA is a watered-down league with too many teams. Their thirst for players to (1) fill roster holes and (2) find the next superstar is a huge drain on the college basketball system.

March 8, 2009  06:39 PM ET

Is this a story? Same thing happened to the PAC-10 last year. The most talented league is the one most likely to lose players to the NBA.

March 8, 2009  06:40 PM ET

Seems like a no-brainer. A heavily talent-laden Conference will potentially have several players move on to the next level? Who would have thought it....

March 9, 2009  01:49 PM ET

Unless the only single solitary thing they are looking for his money, Ellington and Green should stay. They are not ready.

March 9, 2009  01:56 PM ET

Docmadlab -

Danny Green is a senior. His eligibility is up. He can't stay...

March 9, 2009  04:16 PM ET

This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone really and the talent the ACC brings in on a yearly basis will really downplay the significance of it all in my opinion..

March 9, 2009  04:50 PM ET

Should be interesting to see if James Johnson or Jeff Teague from Wake test the waters - I think both will be back because they could make a national championship run with the players they have coming back next year

March 9, 2009  05:19 PM ET

hey ZanzibarAnnie .. Danny Green is a Senior .. DOH !!!!!

March 9, 2009  05:21 PM ET

*** Correction *** Docmadlab sorry Zan

March 9, 2009  08:19 PM ET

Jeff teague and al farouq aminu might stay, and they should. Ty Lawson and Wayne are gonna leave for sure. and Gerald Henderson is probable, but Kyle Singler will probably stay. best conference in the world.

I agree with the watered down league. The NBA, as well as other professional sports, they have too many teams and it makes most the season BORING. Why not get rid of 4-6 teams and get rid of the scrubs that don't belong in the league. This way talent would more evenly spread out instead of stars being stuck on HORRIBLE teams.

GOO HEELS, FINISH THIS SEASON OF INJURIES OFF WITH A NATIONAL TITLE.

Ok. Thanks. I didn't realize that. Well then, good luck to him. He's going to need it.

Forget it. Barring a series of upsets where Pitt, Uconn, Louisville etc are all taken out, UNC will not be cutting down any championship nets this year. The only way that happens is if none of those other teams make it to the title game which is unlikely.

Kleenex may as well ship a pallet of tissues to Chapel Hill now so that strung out meth addict looking Hansborough can dry his generous supply of eyeball, because he will certainly be crying us a river soon enough.

March 10, 2009  06:07 PM ET

Danny Green game is probably the most adaptable to the NBA, so if he works hard enough, he should make a pretty good pro. Wayne Ellington on the hand, needs to stay.

March 10, 2009  06:37 PM ET

Ellington has been way too inconsistent this season, and his defense leaves a lot to be desired. It is the reason he had to pull out of the draft. He gets torch him on a pretty regular basis. He had a great all-around game against Duke, though.

Danny Green has all the tools to be a good pro. He will get drafted late, likely in the second round, but he'll stick on a team.

Hansbrough will get picked late in the second round. Scouts agree that he will be a good bench/role player with his intensity and expanding game, but he is a low risk/low reward type.

And how about Ed Davis? I am not saying he is ready, but the NBA drafts on potential. 6'11" with good instincts, can jump out the gym, great defensively...

March 10, 2009  06:38 PM ET

I meant late in the first round for Hansbrough

March 10, 2009  10:41 PM ET

hansbrough will be late first round/early second round.
