How Seahawks landed Houshmandzadeh

09:38 AM ET 03.08 | Sometimes a free agent is looking at more than the bottom line. Sometimes he wants to be wooed. Consider the case of T.J. Houshmandzadeh, the free-agent receiver from Cincinnati who never felt fully appreciated with the Bengals, even though he's the only NFL player with at least 90 catches each of the last three seasons. Houshmandzadeh signed with Seattle last week, picking the Seahawks over the Minnesota Vikings. And check out the lengths the Seahawks went -- above and beyond a five-year, $40-million contract -- to convince him he was their guy. First, they dispatched one of the jets belonging to Seahawks owner Paul Allen, the Microsoft mega-billionaire, to pick up Houshmandzadeh and his wife and kids in Los Angeles and fly them to Seattle. Then, once the family arrived, they hopped on Allen's seaplane for a tour of the city, including a pass over Qwest Field, where the scoreboard was lighted with a shot of the receiver and his career stats. Also onboard the seaplane were Seahawks Coach Jim Mora, offensive coordinator Greg Knapp and a couple of Seattle defensive backs, who, Mora joked, "didn't want to have to cover T.J. if he went to the Vikings." After the hourlong tour, the plane swooped down and landed on Lake Washington, directly in front of the Seahawks' massive new training facility, where Houshmandzadeh got a full-court-press sales pitch about how he would be featured in next season's offense. This type of free-agent visit -- far more elaborate than one for a typical player -- is choreographed to the last detail. For instance, one of the Seahawks' equipment men used to work in Cincinnati, and knew the kind of shoes and gloves that Houshmandzadeh prefers. And there they were, the same brand of shoes and gloves, complete with the lime-green Seahawks detail, positioned just so on a table where Houshmandzadeh couldn't help but notice them.

Sounds like it would have been too hard to turn down!

I could see were Paul Allen could make a few promises above and beyond a contract

They were the only one's that spelled his name right on his jersey!

I'm sure $40 million also played a large part in his decision..

March 8, 2009  10:22 AM ET

all the $$$$$$$ did not hurt the cause either.

March 8, 2009  10:32 AM ET

too bad he cannot play DB for them. Seahawks need to worry more about covering guys like Boldin, Fitzgerald and Breaston. Housh is consistent though and is a physical blocker. At least they did not burn a 1st rounder on him like they did for Branch. Build through the draft guys follow the Ravens' and Steelers' model.

I'll tell you why Houshmanzedah never felt fully appreciated here. Two words Ocho Cinco. Chad seemed to be always in the limelight, but not always the best receiver. I was always a strong believer that Houshmanzedah should be there number 1 guy, but he wasn't as flashy as Chad. That's all there is too it.

exactly-
if they gave him a nice day trip & offered less $$ he would've been elsewhere

give me a break.....
Cincy is a HORRIBLE franchise- they are the LA Clippers of the NFL
it has NOTHING to do with 85......
no offense meant towards you fans- I'm a Jets fan after all- I feel your pain.....

The bottom line is the $$$- if they gave him more $$- he stays

March 8, 2009  01:23 PM ET

Haha... Hawks are probably kicking themselves today now knowing if they had just waited they could have saved the whoeing for Owens. Talk about going after the best of a bad crop...

I just want to puke

March 8, 2009  01:53 PM ET

I am not to familiar with the Bengals organization... But are they really as bad as the Clippers???... If so... No wonder Housh got out

March 8, 2009  02:01 PM ET

No mention that before Housh left Seattle Mora demanded that Housh leave his watch with him as collateral, guaranteeing he would come back.

Mora gave it back to him at the Press Conference announcing his signing.

Why the Bengals didn't deal Chad away
last year and keep TJ is beyond me.

The reason is that the Bengals are the Detroit Lions of the AFC. They value WR play far more than the positions that really build championship caliber teams like those on the OL and DL.

I happen to think letting Housh go was a good move -- and you're right that they should have traded Ocho Cinco last year. But Chad need not worry -- April will be here before you know it, and the Bengals may trade him for a pick if there's a receiver in this year's draft that they like.

But knowing the Bengals, they'll keep Chad as hostage and waste a high round draft pick on WR to replace Housh. As for the lines -- well, those can wait for next year (or the year after, or the year after that).

2005 was the ONLY winning season they've had since 1990
- that is 100% management-

The NFL needs to start paying these so called Pros like TO, Houshmanzdah, and Chad for what they are worth, not for what they thing they are worth. They think ME makes the team. Where I come from it takes more than one player to make a team, let alone a good team. I guess if the NFL keeps paying them big money, we will always hear them crying about how good they are.

Picked him up in LA? Cheap asses. He lives in Cincy!

Here's the pitch. Housh, do you want to keep losing in that urban Hell hole you're in now, or go North and spend half your year will your bolls walking on top of the snow, or would you like to come to a real city with a decent downtown and enjoy life year round? Lots of money everywhere. Lots of love everywhere. You're a smart guy. Think it over.
