It's hard to imagine Oregon football without Mike Bellotti. But for the first time in nearly 15 years, the Ducks might be without the man who has come to personify football in Eugene. Bellotti's possible departure from the coaching sidelines has been well known since December, when he named offensive coordinator Chip Kelly as his eventual successor. But the scenario seems more realistic now after the 14-year head coach recently told the Portland Tribune that he will make a decision by spring ball about whether to come back for another round at Oregon.

It was a good reign while it lasted...

Why would he wait until spring ball?

Those were my thoughts.

Sad to see him go. He brought stability and respectability to the program.

Damn good coach... Seems to be a classy guy... Can't see him go soon enough

He has to wait for Duck basketball to finish. Kilkenny fires Kent, then steps down. Bellotti becomes AD. Bellotti doesn't want his first task as AD to fire Kent. That's why he waits for spring ball.

He and Rich Brooks have been the only head coaches since 1977.....I'm guessin' Oregon is hoping for Chip Brooks to have a nice long run at the school.....

That is amazing. Is this really true? 2 coaches in the past 32 years? That is stability!

And out of that 32 years how many times has Oregon won the PAC-10 and gone to the Rose bowl? The answer is 1 and that was 1995 and lost to Penn State 38 to 20. Before that 1958. So twice in the last 50 years great consistantency!!!!

It looks like we know the answer to my blog from a month ago.

Bellotti is first. Maybe Bowden will be second.

March 11, 2009  03:22 PM ET

i do believe Oregon won the pac 10 in 2001, and tied for first place a couple times around that time.

March 11, 2009  03:27 PM ET

Since 1989...OREGON has made 16 Bowl Game Appearances.....INCLUDING the Rose Bowl...Cotton Bowl...Fiesta Bowl...MARYLAND....7 appearances.......

Oklahoma has other troubles...

Consistency - It has an "E".

And, Oklahoma is consistently losing in its biggest games (BCS Bowls, Texas). Keep it up!

March 11, 2009  03:39 PM ET

For the gator longhorn who can't make up his mind and How many times has texas won the big 12 in that last 13 years? Texas 2 time have been to the Big 12 championship game 4 time in that time. OU as been 7 and won 6 including the last 3 in a row. That is more consistant than Texas.

March 11, 2009  03:43 PM ET

Row32 you are right Oregon they did in 2002 but they did not go to the Rose bowl that year because that was the year the BCS championship was played there. So it is still 2 times in the last 50 years they won the PAC-10 and gone to the Rose bowl.

March 11, 2009  03:48 PM ET

speaking of consistency...how about that great long tradition of recuiting violations that oklahoma has.....

March 11, 2009  03:59 PM ET

Row32 list the recuiting violations if you can and if you bring up Sampson that is Basketball and it was phone calls and he is gone and He also did it at Indiana, so that is on him not the school and if you bring up something from the eighties OU just got caught every team was doing it including Oregon.
