Kobe goes off on trash-talking Artest

Kobe Bryant hasn't been overly cordial this week, slipping out a side door after the Lakers lost Monday in Portland, preferring the silence of an empty team bus over extended postgame analysis. He also declined to speak to reporters after a Wednesday afternoon shoot-around, furthering the notion that he was all business these days. In other words, it was a bad idea for Houston forward Ron Artest to start trash-talking to him during Wednesday night's game. Bryant responded by scoring 13 points in the third quarter and 18 in the fourth as the short-handed Lakers held off the Rockets, 102-96, at the Toyota Center. A few years ago, Bryant pleaded with the Lakers' front office to trade for Artest. On Wednesday, he merely seemed offended by Artest's in-game antics, calling the dialogue "edgy" and scoffing when asked about their one-on-one "battle." "It wasn't much of a battle . . . I kicked his . . . ," Bryant said. "We've had some battles in the past and he's gotten the best of me a few times. [Wednesday], I got the best of him."

Artest told Kobe "you ain't ready for me" , Guess he found out different huh ??

Kobe had that look in his eye after that shoving match. That 3rd quarter was really fun to watch. Kobe instantly took the game over. He had an absolutely sick line- 37 Points, 14 for 23 shooting, 6 Assists, 4 Steals, 2 Blocks---fuhgetaboutit. He has that mindset where he absolutely plays better when he gets pissed off. I didn't know what to expect from the Lakers without Bynum, and Odom sidelined. Lakers used a heavy dose of Josh Powell who played 3x more minutes than usual. We will see if they have anything in the tank against the Spurs tonight.

On another note- Von Wafer is turning out to be a quality player.

oh quick question to all the NBA intellects out there. Why don't any other teams use a form of the Triangle offense? It seems to be so effective that you would think other coaches would attempt using it.

As much as I like the Rockets, I have to give it up for Kobe. This guy is something else to watch. He is certainly on the path of an all time great player.

... but still, your lebron loves him.

AND, get a new joke, that "rapist" one is so 2003. nobody talks about it anymore. try a butter joke or a chuck norris one.

interesting point. He really would be an asset to the Lakers who need a defensive stopper.

Since the Odom, Artest trade rumors took place, the seed has already been planted. The Lakers I believe are strapped for cash next year even with Odom coming off the books. Basically all that Odom money is going straight into Bynum's pocket.

Triangle offense is one of the most effective but most technical offenses to run. There is no set plays persay but it requires a lot of timing. one side of the court we know they run a triangle and on the other side the other 2 are running a 2 man game of picks/screens.

the problem is that it takes a while to execute it and requires a lot of patience and team chemestry and more importantly need basketball iq more than talent. You def have to right kind of players to make it effective and to buy into the system because its really easy to mess it up.

the reason why i think most coaches don't use it, because it hinders individual play and players get frustrated because it requires being able to play off the ball.

the offense doesn't allow a player like nash, rose, paul, etc... to create the play. thats why the bulls and lakers never have any really good pg's because you really don't need it. just need someone to bring up the ball and run the play.

March 12, 2009  08:49 AM ET

Ron-Ron is my boy but damn he shouldn't have taunted Kobe. Asking Kobe if he's ready for him is just asking for 40 to get dropped on you.

I know the two traded jabs for the most part in fun, but I thought Ron knew better. I guess not, now.

March 12, 2009  08:52 AM ET

If Kobe can do this consistently especially in the playoffs then they will be hard to beat. Does he need somebody to talk trash to him to light a fire? That should not be the case. He needs to bring it night in and night out but at the same time he needs to bring his teammates along. He needed to that in the finals last year. I hope he learned his lesson.

March 12, 2009  08:53 AM ET

Nobody has ever accused Artest of being real smart. Actions like this are the reason why.

I know the nuances of the triple-post, passing to the weak-side forward or, pinch post options. I would just think that this offense would be utilized more,or maybe one of Phils ex-assistants would be hired to run it somewhere.

Hey- your Hawks are still hanging in there. I am actually pretty impressed the beat the Hornets, then the Jazz last night. They have a tough schedule ahead though. Well see if the Heat can catch em'

I think last year in the finals he brought his game but couldn't do anything against that defense. Gasoft and Odom were a no show.. they played with no heart last year, but this year its different, they got a taste of the finals and i think it will be a different story this year.

Kobe went off last night but thats because he doesn't have the support cast he had in the first half of the season due to injury. so until he gets help he be putting up good numbers

March 12, 2009  09:01 AM ET

i like artest's "kobe ain't ****" approach.. but come on ron ron u don't have to tell kobe about it..

March 12, 2009  09:05 AM ET

Kobe is a fearless vampire killer! I love that if it comes to winning or being personable Kobe is more than willing to turn into a petulant arrogant show stopper.

March 12, 2009  09:05 AM ET

Artest is GANGSTA! No doubt about it. He's one of my top five cause he's by far the toughest dude in the league. I mean would Battier ask Kobe to bring it on? Artest is the only one in the league that enjoys when all-star opponents go off and try to drop 40 on him, although he lost that one against Kobe he's won some in the past bu shutting Kobe and others down.

Kobe and Artest are the same in that they are both so competitive, and that's the reason Kobe wanted Artest a few years ago. I still watch that Indiana vs Detroit brawl. Artest is the man!

'Put me in that all-star game and I'll be playing hard defense, and be hard fouling.'
