Syracuse's new head football coach Doug Marrone spoke at a Section 4 Football Coaches Clinic at Johnson City High over the weekend. Marrone said one of his main goals is to prove there are plenty of talented high school football players in New York State. "I cannot stand for the life of me people saying how bad New York football is. It's bull. It's bull! And you know what? I am going to prove they're wrong when I get a roster filled with New York kids and we're beating other teams around the country," Marrone said.

No knock on NY football, but good luck with beating teams with a NY-filled roster.

I admire Marrone's statement but honestly there isn't any good talent in New York State. The state just doesn't have top talent. We are far behind New Jersey and Pennsylvania and lately it seems that Connecticut and Massachusetts have better talent and higher rated recruiting prospects then New York does.

Marrone better figure out quick that he is going to have to dip into New Jersey and Pennsylvania if he wants to have success with the Orange.

They all come to FL to recruit, he will too.

March 12, 2009  09:44 AM ET

TX,FL,OH,PA,VA. Focus on those states Doug!

It's just how it is. It's like Tenn's team is full of players from other states because Tennessee is not a good recruiting state, it's just the truth. New York is the same way, you've gotta recruit well outside.

And like GatorBaitor said, they all come to Florida to recruit.

He's in a tough situation. I don't hold high hopes for him, just because of the situation.

March 12, 2009  10:45 AM ET

I will believe it when I see it.....

He has to say this because when there are good NY recruits he needs the NY coaches to have a favorable view of his program. Of course he will recruit heavily outside of NY, but why burn bridges when you are inheriting a decrepit program to begin with?

Good point.

I agree with J Hova - that's a good point. It's a more subtle way of saying, "We're going to put a fence around the state." Lane Kiffin, please take note.

But, he doesn't paint himself into a corner by actually saying he would lock down the state. He just puts people on notice that the good NY recruits will be recruited to the best of his ability. And there are some good players that come out of NY. Alabama had Derrick Lassic as starting TB on their team when they won the NC. He's from NY.

wait...hold on...where's the cussing in this speech and the passion

March 12, 2009  11:39 AM ET

I think all he's saying is that he's going to put emphasis on NY players. SU has ALWAYS gotten a lot of kids from PA and NJ, as well as FL and other states. Marrone is just trying to protect the home front.

March 12, 2009  11:49 AM ET

The important thing, which hasn't happened in the last 4 years, is to have quality players at the skill positions AND to coach to their abilities. Robinson was a failure on both counts.

I agree. But the quote "I am going to prove they're wrong when I get a roster filled with New York kids and we're beating other teams around the country," suggests that he will beat teams from the south with at least a 60-70% NY-filled roster. I don't think there's enough D1 talent in NY to fill a team. But I do understand he wants the homegrown talent to get fired up to represent the state.

March 12, 2009  12:48 PM ET

I agree with coach Marrone, there is talent in the state of NY. Rutgers,NC state, BC, Duke and UNC have kids from NYS on there rosters. North NJ HS recruit some of the top NY HS players to there schools in Football and Bball. I'm sure coach will go out of state for some other top quality players. But the SU roster does not need to be 50% florida kids.

Is this a serious article. Or, is someone practicing for April Fool's?

March 12, 2009  12:51 PM ET

Do they play football in NY? Hell, I don't think NY produces the country's best b-ball players any more.

dont forget Cali 2, lots of talent in that state. but going that far might stretch SYR. budget

You may not be wrong about that. New York City has Lance Stephenson this year and there are always talented ballers in State but I am sure the State of New York would be behind some others in basketball talent as well.

And I read somewhere that Georgia has as many or more top recruits than Ohio. Has anyone else heard that?
