Self's plan for post-upset Jayhawks

08:22 AM ET 03.13 | Strange thing, but you couldn't help but think that Kansas coach Bill Self got a bit of perverse satisfaction out of his team's ghastly loss to Baylor in the Big 12 tournament Thursday. True, he might not sleep for four days. But that's a whole other thing. "Today is a reality check," Self says. "First thing we are doing, we go back and we get to the hotel. And we go to school tomorrow, make all the players walk around class tomorrow with all the other students wondering, 'Why are you back here already?' And then, we will practice as hard as we have ever practiced the next two days."

ROCK CHALK!! KU cant win every big 12 tournament. You would think so considering we had own the last 8 big 12 titles. 5 regular season and 3 tourneys. Bill Self = best coach in nation. The Jayhawks will be ready to play next Thursday or Friday.

jayhawkfan - Rock Chalk Choke!! You aren't worried about how your beloved jayhawks finished the season? A blowout loss to TECH!!! and a squeaker at home against an overrated Texas team. Keep making yourself feel better with all your historical facts. Fact is, you got beat by a YMCA coach and a bunch of street ballers (both in Baylor and Tech). Sic 'Em Bears.

SI needs to save this photo, they can use it in the NCAA's when the J-Hawks "Self-implode"

This is the same type of thing that happened with the last group of freshman. They lost some early games learning how to win at the college level. They lost some conference games learning the new intensity level. They lost early in the tournament before learning how to win there. The current team learned to win, but now they have to learn how to close out a season and close out a game better. And now, they are learning about tourney intensity. As for worrying about the end of the season? Nah, not really worried. Why? If you watched the Baylor game, they got open shots, they just missed them. And that happens sometimes. Sometimes you just miss a good shot. If they were taking bad shots and not playing defense, I would worry. But taking good shots and just missing? Hey, no one is perfect and sometimes you just have a bad shooting day, week, etc. You just have to shoot your way out of it. Rock Chalk Jayhawk!

This team wasn't even suppose to contend for the Big 12 regular season title, and this team won it. Hey, Pitt and OU lost to unranked teams also, are they "choke artists"? UNC barely beat Virginia Tech, are they "losing it"? I don't think so. OU has lost 3 of it's last 5 and nobody talks about them because they have Blake Griffin. This KU team has FAR exceeded KU fan's expectations and he if we get the Sweet 16 it will be a great year to build on in the future. This team has the same setup as our championship team did last year except I feel they are more advanced than that team was at that time. We will be fine and soon be back on top, ROCK CHALK JAYHAWKS!

so he's going to kill their legs in practice before the big dance...at this point in the season it should be about keeping the conditioning and skills up, not about practicing as hard as u can

March 13, 2009  03:29 PM ET

Don't worry, they can handle it, if UConn and Syracuse can handle 6 OTs, we can handle a hard practice or two.

I agree, even though Collins is hurting us from time to time (see Baylor game) it would be a BIG benefit if he came back next year with this team, we should easily be a top 10 team next year and clear favorite to win the Big 12. And the home court winning streak is pretty impressive as well, longest in the nation. So much for "taking advantage" of a young KU squad this year. Everybody had their chance and they couldn't get the job done! I'm just savoring our 5th straight conference championship!

Hard to argue that. Self has done a great job and they are the cream of the crop in the Big 12.

sounds like rocket science.

Read the article. He says they will really bust it for the next 2 days. There are 6 days before they have to play again. The hard work is to sharpen the mind, not the body. What this team has done after losing all they lost is exceptional. If they win a game or two in the tournament I am more then happy.

Myagi, this is SI after all. They have one photo for the entire Miami Dolphins team for 2007-? and its Kim Jong Parcells, not even wearing a Dolphins colors tie so they can recycle it. Your kids are going to be looking at this picture.

Rock Chalk Jayhawk. I wasn't a big Self fan when he got to KU, but every year he is developing into an even better coach. They may not win this year but they are going to be loaded next year.
