Leafs coach: 'We're short on talent'

10:06 AM ET 03.14 | At the NHL trade deadline, Dominic Moore went to Buffalo, Nik Antropov went to New York and the Maple Leafs' offence went AWOL. In the five games since the ol' gang got busted up and Toronto traded two of its top four scorers for draft picks, the Leafs have managed only eight goals. Since Moore and Antropov were healthy scratches on the eve of the deadline, you can take that drought back six games, a stretch over which they've tallied a grand total of 10 goals. When it comes to finding the net, the Leafs have gone from high-speed to dial-up. "We've lost some very important people and the guys we put in our lineup aren't even known as being goal scorers at the minor-league level," said coach Ron Wilson, explaining the dry spell. "We're missing Tomas Kaberle on the point on the power play (which is 1-for-16 since the deadline). We're missing Niklas Hagman. Systems don't score goals. Sometimes you need some talent in the lineup as well. And we're a little bit short there."

And this team will still not be bad enough to finish in the bottom 5!
How aggravating it that?

Who would have believed that they're not good enough to make the PO and not bad enough to get Tavares or Hedman!

It has to be driving Wilson insane. In any other city, a team as uninspiring and lacklustre as the Leafs would draw no interest from reporters. In T.O., they line up in droves as if the team was ready to lift Lord Stanley any minute. On top of this, he has to answer the same idiotic questions again and again, "What is wrong with the PP?" "How come your scoring is down?" etc. He must feel like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day.
He has spelled it out to reporters time and again that this team is NOWHERE close to competing for anything serious and that their talent is seriously lacking in all areas. He has admitted they stink on numerous occasions... can't fault him for his honesty. He and Burke must sit back in the GM offices and laugh their arses off at the insane media and fan interest in such a horrid team. While they are sipping some top shelf wine and gorfing vintage cheeses, of course.

The Leafs need to be restored to a powerhouse,it's not good for the league that they stink, hopefully Burke will suceed but it's gonna get worse before it gets better.

If Burkie intends to make this team a 'powerhouse' again, he needs to do a lot more than he did at the deadline. I still believe trading Antropov for a 2nd rounder was a mistake to a certain extent. He's a solid 20 goal scorer and a big guy up front. Maybe this off season, he'll deal Kaberle for a forward and sort out his ridiculous goaltending situation. Toskala will be back, Cujo and Kolzig will retire and Pogge should be the #2 guy. This team needs a serious infusion of talent but, who's gonna wanna play on a rebuilding team every year?

How many picks do they have in the upcoming draft?

I believe the Leafs currently have 9 picks.
1st
2nd -(Carolina)
2nd -(Rangers)
3rd
4th (Carolina)
5th
6th
7th + another conditional Rangers pick, depending on how far they go once/if they make the playoffs.
I may be mistaken, but I think that's how it currently stands. I just hope they make good on a few and do not draft like past regimes.

I believe the 4th was bought from Tampa, not Carolina, my bad.

First thing the Leafs should do to start the rebuilding process is get rid of this dikhed coach. There is no sense in paying for or drafting talent only to let this pekahead coach them.
That being said, the Leafs have sucked for almost 50 years now and no one outside of Toronto seems to care. It's a shame.

Wilson went on to make other earth-shattering statements such as "Christmas will fall on December 25th this year" and "I predict that it will get darker once the sun goes down."

The only problem with Wilson is that he insists on this lousy team to work their arces off every night...the problem with that is...the idiots keep winning or gaining an ot point...the purpose of this season is to LOSE...and LOSE BIG! IDIOTS!!@!

8-6 over CALGARY! You have got to be kidding me!
J.C - NO one seems to get it yet! LOSE BIG or lose small and doing it small keeps you where youve been since 67. NOBODY BLOODY well cares if the LEAFS win one more game this season and no one will lose their managament or coaching jobs...MAn this stuff ticks me off.
Same as last year with the Egghead. Start really winning when it means squat! LOSE or hit the playoffs. THOSE are the only 2 options...and lose for a top pick. If not...Burke had damn well better be able to pull some rabbits out ...if not...he better let Wilson know that he know the team can win meaningless games...to relax...and man down till the end of the season...which is already too late IMO for a top 5 draft pick...IDIOTS!!!!

Leafs are hilarious ... their goal was never to win anything, it was always to squeak into the playoffs as #8. 'Where anything can happen.'
Now they can't even do that. Maybe it's gonna 40 yrs before they make the playoffs again.
