Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy, who became an instant celebrity with his "I'm a Man, I'm 40" rant on YouTube, said his famous tirade to defend one of his former players is helping the Cowboys with recruiting future players. Even Gundy admits he never anticipated the recruiting benefits from the emotional outburst which got so popular it was the punchline for jokes. "No, I didn't expect it, in any way, shape, form or fashion," Gundy told the AJC. "It's interesting since that day, which happened on impulse in my opinion, to protect and take care of one of our players, I didn't have any idea that it would take off like this. From that point on, for good or bad, I've become very recognizable across the country. In turn, what has has happened in the last couple of years in recruiting, it has helped us tremendously. I think the parents of these young men understand that 'If my son goes to play at Oklahoma State, the coach is going to do whatever he can to take care of him.'"

Gundy's an idiot and the kid he was "protecting" is a p*ssy.

I loved Gundy's rant. Any time someone has a chance to tell a journalist to f-off is cool with me.

I read an article about that player-- he didn't appreciate the comments at all, and viewed Gundy's tirade as those of a publicity hound.

yep exactly....which is what it was. WAY over the top IMO.

Defended him (I believe the player's name was Reid) all the way to FCS Texas Southern.

"I am a man. I am 40" (well, almost), and my son will never play for him. It was over the top (even Reid was confused at his coach's defense of him, as he confirmed a lot of the article that spawned the outburst was fairly on the nose), and took away attention from a critical game and a critical result for OSU. They went 6-6 that year in the regular season, and only made their bowl game because Michael Crabtree dropped a 4th down touchdown pass, square in his hands, in the last few seconds of THAT game.

Any player that is influenced by a "man" throwing a hissy fit like a little school girl probably needs to quit football

What about a player infuenced by a man ripping his shirt off and screaming "Wild Boys"?

Yeah, I'm not buying Gundy's false Bravado either... when a coach has to deal with someone the likes of Drew Sharp, then maybe I could understand. But what that reporter actually wrote simply suggested a helicopter parent was getting in the way of an otherwise talented youth... a youth who wasn't living up to his potential. I'd hardly consider that insulting.

I realize it was about 1 and 1/2 years ago, but obviously people's memory needs to be refreshed. Jenni Carlson of the Daily Oklahoman wrote an article which suggested that the reason highly recruited quarterback Bobby Reid had lost his starting job was because he was a sissy-boy. Jenni said she got the info from the OSU coaching staff. Gundy said (and I believe him) that he was pissed (1) because he felt that the article was an unfair personal attack on Reid. I also believe that (2) he was REALLY pissed because she said the OSU coaching staff backed up her story. The facts which came out afterward are as follows: (1) Bobby Reid really was a sissy-boy; (2) Reid lost his starting job because Zac Robinson was a better quarterback; (3) Gundy has never raised his voice on camera again, probably due to embarrassment over the "rant."

Seems as though his rant overall has worked out in his favor. People are still talking about him and many believe he spoke out against something he believed was wrong. So ask yourself, with the performance the Cowboys have been displaying as of late, do you really think Gundy gives a **** what any of you so called experts that have never played a down of major college football think ??? Answer- No he doesn't.

Those of us who have known Gundy's attitude know that he is a guy that used to fly off the cuff at his own teammates when he was a QB there. It isn't necessarily a good trait, but he gets results. It doesn't sound like he would purposely plan a stunt, he just probably was waiting for an opportunity to encounter Jenni and let her have it. BTW, Bobby isn't the first starter in major college football to lose his starting job and have a story written about him by the local paper. He only got to tell his "side" of the story because his coach is an internet celebrity. Otherwise, this would be a non-event. Bobby is obviously upset because he got "BEAT OUT" of his starting job, but that is exactly what happened. Every time he ran an option play, he'd get a case of turf toe, or pulled hamstring, or something stupid. Zac was better, plain and simple.
