Away from the locker room but in Oracle Arena's underbelly, Shaquille O'Neal worked out Sunday . . . before the game. He said he did 200 sit-ups and 200 push-ups in a concrete corner, an area more suited for 200 crates. That does not even count the times the Suns center bench-pressed strength-and-conditioning coach Erik Phillips in the locker room before scoring 26 points in a 154-130 win at Golden State. O'Neal is doing more off and on the court than expected of the NBA's fifth-oldest player. He comes to US Airways Center on off-nights for workouts or free-throw practice and has joined Jared Dudley on "the (Steve) Nash diet - no meat, no sugar, no starch, no soda, no nothing." "I'm feeling good," he said. "I'm in shape." Even in the season's fastest game Sunday, O'Neal found chances to make 11 of 13 shots in 24 minutes, including an alley-oop slam that energized him to try a transition dribble drive two plays later. "I'm going to be putting up big numbers until I'm 40," O'Neal, 37, said.

Shaq's big numbers = his weight.

March 17, 2009  07:31 AM ET

atleast Shaq did something with his size/weight/talent.......so many 7 footers have failed in the NBA..........(Eddy Curry)...........if Eddy Curry reads these boards (while he is working out) his self esteem must be terrible.

March 17, 2009  08:25 AM ET

sadly, burgers... not points

March 17, 2009  08:33 AM ET

lol yeah right! Yes you are playing the best in the last two years but your team is not should I say more?

March 17, 2009  08:35 AM ET

He will and seems determine. This is the difference between Eddy Curry and Jerom James, Shaq has proven his worth all his life and continues to produce while the these 2 bums just receive their welfare checks.

Wow, he's putting up big numbers now the Suns are running and gunning again. Would he put up big numbers in a defensive system? It's debatable.

I just hope he doesn't play till he's 40 cause I'm sick of him.

You must have missed his years with the Lakers and Magic when he was putting up big numbers, oh and the Heat. His first team with a run-and-gun offense has been the Suns.

Yes, clearly Shaq only puts up big numbers at the expense of his teams winning games. Let's just ignore his 4 NBA Championships and 5 NBA Finals appearances. Don't let facts get in the way of your blabbering.

O mY i totally think T&R is in Love with SHaq, they want to lick his black asso until he's 40....they got nothing better to talk about beside him.

agree-

he's CURRENTLY a top 5 center in the game
-granted the overall center crop is weak...but that's not his fault

March 17, 2009  09:26 AM ET

Not at the free throw line you won't!

Okay Vaughn, so I forgot that last Finals appearance when the Lakers lost to the Pistons. The fact that Shaq has been to 6 NBA Finals, and won 4 of them only further solidifies my point. Shaq's a winner.

Yup, on the scale...fo sho

March 17, 2009  10:09 AM ET

Shaq got about 3 more years in him, but I hope he's joking with this 40 stuff.

In 3 more years he will be 40.

March 17, 2009  10:43 AM ET

What O'Neal did earlier in his career isn't particularly relevant to his current skill level. He doesnt match up well with the better teams and better interior defenders. It seems the more his skills diminish, the more he makes himself a sideshow. Hang it up RuPaul.

Yet another person failed by the American Math educational system. Lol.

March 17, 2009  10:56 AM ET

No way he can be 100% healthy at 40.

I'm just plain tired of reading about him everyday. Can we please go 2 days without a remark from his fat arse or a comment about what LeBron thinks?
