Leinart blames Hollywood for slide

Who could argue Matt Leinart's Mr. Hollywood label? But Leinart sure did try. He still blames that image for his slide to the 10th pick in the 2006 draft by the Cardinals, even though he didn't help himself by hiring (but later firing) Hollywood heavyweight Creative Artists Agency to handle his marketing. He threw a birthday bash last month that included a pool party at the luxury Mondrian Scottsdale Hotel, which was attended by Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens and several members of the Suns, who had been eliminated from the NBA playoffs the night before.

I thought the slide was because he played like crap in all his championship games in his draft year.

July 1, 2007  09:34 AM ET

Well, dear killian, you thought wrong. He actually played quite well.

His slide was a Whamo product, requiring a water hose and a bowling green.

July 1, 2007  09:43 AM ET

Maybe it was because hes a flake. I've seen some of his local TV appearences and United Way commercials and he seems a couple McNuggets short of a happy meal.

July 1, 2007  09:57 AM ET

Getoffa, Leinart - will be fine. Let the man play. I see Arizona making the playoffs.....

July 1, 2007  09:59 AM ET

A man, be he a football player or otherwise, creates his own image. Look at TO, for example. If you don't like your image, there is one person who can change it. If you can't figure that out, I have trouble feeling sorry for you.

July 1, 2007  10:20 AM ET

I like Leinart ,I'm looking foward to somehow getting tickets to the new stadium but it seems like they're the hot ticket here.I think he'll take this team to the playoff and that he's talented I just think he's flaky.

July 1, 2007  11:03 AM ET

Leinart is a tool. I was estatic when the Longhorns upended them in the bcs championship game. After the game they talked to leinart and he was as sore as they come saying he still thinks his team was better and they should have won with a tear coming down his face.

July 1, 2007  11:17 AM ET

Right on, Grogseal. Maybe hanging out with Paris Hilton had something to do with it. If he wants to improve his image he should shut up and build on his fairly successful rookie year. You're judged by the company you keep; Paris and TO - 'nuff said.

July 1, 2007  12:01 PM ET

He's a good QB, but he needs to face the reality that he was the 2nd best QB coming out and no teams ahead of Arizona needed a QB (well, except Oakland, but Al Davis is Al Davis and Detroit, who put faith in Jon Kitna anyway). So you had the Titans and Arizona in the top 10. Vince Young went first because he had a better season than Leinart in college. He was the highest rated passer in the NCAAs.

July 1, 2007  12:10 PM ET

I like Leinart, and I think he'll be a good QB for the Cards, but I do agree that hanging out with Paris Hilton etc., makes him seem VERY HOLLYWOOD. That could have something to do with why he slid down the draft boards, but who can say? Why did Aaron Rodgers slide? Brady Quinn? Sometimes people get overhyped before a draft, and on the same token sometimes they get picked apart. I beleive with Leinart it was just a case of too many teams focusing on his negatives and not his positives and then blowing them out of proportion(kinda like Jerry Seinfeld always did with women on his show). I'm glad it happened though, and he should be too, cuz I think Arizona's a better place to be than Oakland or Tennessee. Of all the teams that NEEDED a QB last year and drafted one in the 1st or early 2nd rd I think only Denver was a better job than the one Leinart got.......Besides, isn't EVERYONE getting a piece of Paris Hilton!? There have GOT to be plenty of better looking, classier, less diseased women out there a guy like Leinart could pal around with/pork........

July 1, 2007  12:23 PM ET

I can hear it now - 10 games into the season and Leinart has thrown 25 TDs and the Cards are, for once, in the hunt to make the playoffs - All the Leinart naysayers will be saying, "Geez! I knew he'd be a great NFL quarterback."

July 1, 2007  01:04 PM ET

Haha, killian. Its because Vince was the better QB and he got beat, but scoring 38 points against Texas isnt playing like crap.

July 1, 2007  01:08 PM ET

So what if he is Hollywood. Back in the day, Joe Naimath was very hollywood but he still took the Jets to a Superbowl championship, A jets team that was supposed to get stomped by the Colts.

July 1, 2007  01:09 PM ET

who cares if he's got the "hollywood" label, most pro athletes live his type of lifestyle the only difference is he gets called hollywood because he played for usc, and yes he suffered a draft slide because he lost the bcs championship to vince young but it doesnt matter draft position in the end has no effect on playing ability so let's just give him a shot and see what happens

July 1, 2007  01:37 PM ET

nice read, Champ. As you said, draft position means nothing except more money and more pressure. Look at Brady, a 6th round pick, and Tony Romo, an undrafted free agent, have done in their careers. While I lost respect for Leinart after his whining sore loser routine after the Rose Bowl, I think he will be a great QB after a few years. It's time for him to stop "sulking" about his draft position. If he would stop whining, play as high as his potential seems to be , he will reap the rewards when his rookie contract ends.

July 1, 2007  01:48 PM ET

He slid because his arm strength wasn't great and his speed wasn't great. When you want to be a top 5 pick, everything needs to rate off the charts.... thats how the NFL over analyzes :-) We'll see whether he's worth it or not over the next several years.

July 1, 2007  01:49 PM ET

This guy fits right into pro sports, blaming everyone but himself for his decisions and folks perspective.

July 1, 2007  02:04 PM ET

Well if dating gorgeous woman means ill have to drop to the 10th pick, I guess i would take it

July 1, 2007  02:35 PM ET

Look at what Romo has done in his career? He's had one half of a good season. Lots of qb's have had 6 or 7 good games, sometimes an entire good season then they go down the tubes.

Leinart got the Hollywood label because that's the image he created. He slid in the draft because scouts thought his supporting cast made him a lot better. In Vince young's case, they believed his supporting cast was made better by him.

July 1, 2007  02:54 PM ET

I think Leinart is better than Young but not in the Championship game. In a few years we will see who is better where it counts, the NFL. Attitude is going to have a lot to do with it. Also, checking more than one receiver before you take off running.
