06:09 AM ET 03.19 | Spain's Ricky Rubio, a dazzling point guard with Pete Maravich-like skills and the facial features to match, is considered a lock to be selected in the top 10 of the NBA draft. Several league executives believe the 6-foot-3 Olympian will be a top five pick. The question is, when? It could be this June. Rubio has made it clear that he would like to enter the 2009 draft, according to sources close to the situation. The 18-year-old Rubio is draft-eligible because he will turn 19 before the end of 2009. But it's not that easy. Rubio has a complicated, multimillion-dollar contract buyout with his Spanish team, DKV Joventut Barcelona. NBA teams are allowed to contribute a maximum of $500,000 to buy out the contract of a foreign player. That means if Rubio seeks to leave Joventut, he could be forced to use most of the money from his first NBA contract to pay for the buyout.

Who would they trade to get him? The only way they'd get a top-five pick (if Rubio really does get picked that high) is if they gave up Dirk.

^top-five = top-ten

March 19, 2009  07:37 AM ET

I see him being 2nd overall pick, just under Blake griffin. Rubios performance @ the olympics was stunning for someone of his age, if im not mistaken he was the youngest player to ever play in an olympics final... being 17.

March 19, 2009  07:49 AM ET

He's no Chris Paul OR Deron Williams...not sure why anyone would pick this guy before Steph Curry.

March 19, 2009  08:07 AM ET

C-smith you clearly didnt watch him play in the olympics.. hes MUCH better then steph curry, and hes already been playin professional league in Europe ... a big reasno why some players who are drafted from the NCAA dnot do as well as in the NBA as they did in the NCAA because in NCAA they are playin against otehr kids.. 18-22 or w.e.... but rubio is tearing up euroleague and hes playin against full grown men, so the transition will be a little easier for him... wait 2-3 years... Rubio will be a FAR better player then curry

lol...steph curry?
the kid is a great shooter- but he's like 27 lbs soaking wet,
is short, he isn't a point guard & won't be able to get a shot off
- he'll NEVER be a star in the league-
can be a productive shooter off the bench......but
ain't NO WAY he goes high in the draft- if he does the GM is nuts

March 19, 2009  08:48 AM ET

I bet you though that Rubio has no defensive ability.......a standard among European players. I would take Steph.

March 19, 2009  08:51 AM ET

The guy maybe is good outside the NBA but when he comes into the NBA he will probably be dominated. He shows flashes of greatness but he needs consistency. Being a PG in the NBA is tough. It does not come close to playing in the FIBA leagues.

And I don't get this 1 year college rule. The guy did not go to college. It's unfair for 19 year old players here in the USA.

it's so GMs aren't FORCED to draft guys straight out of HS &
super young international guys
it is a GREAT thing- to be able to evaluate these KIDS for another year

Actually Rubio's defensive acumen has been one of his more highly touted traits. I've been follwing him for a couple years and his main shortcoming is only an "ok" shot, that will improve.

March 19, 2009  09:32 AM ET

This kid's a great talent but he'll end up on a crappy team in the first few picks.

March 19, 2009  09:38 AM ET

I can't wait to see him in the NBA, and watch him on a regular basis. His handle on the ball is unreal.

March 19, 2009  09:55 AM ET

Another softy Euro?
Hmmm.
Will he flop?
Be as soft as a marsh mellow?
Cry for freaking mommy?
LMAO!

You never know. Maybe he will. But I hope he's the real thing.

Rubio is my favourite player going into this draft. Him followed by Brandon Jennings then Physco T.

He passes like no other in the draft, incredible the way he sees the court, he's a nusiance to defenders with his change of speed, the way he uses both hands with ease, and he's stronger than you would think. He's also a great on-the-ball defender, also a great pass interceptor as he sees the passing lanes well. I honestly think he's the BEST PG prospect in the draft, should he enter. I read a scouting report and loads of scouts from NBA teams were drooling over him. They say he's a mix between Steve Nash and Walt Clyde Frazier. Not a great shooter, but leave him space and he'll make it. His shot is fundamentally sound.

'In August 2006, Rubio led the junior Spanish national team to the FIBA Europe Under-16 Championship. During the tournament Rubio achieved three triple-doubles and one quadruple-double. In the 110-106 double overtime finale victory over Russia, Rubio scored 51 points???the first player to do so in FIBA tournaments since Luol Deng???, grabbed 24 rebounds, made 12 assists, and stole the ball seven times???a performance unprecedented in the tournament's history. He also forced the first overtime with a three-point, buzzer-beating shot from mid-court. Rubio was subsequently named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament after leading it in points, rebounds, assists and steals.' - CRAZY!!!!

You should also see what the NBA players said of him after the Olympics, Carmelo Anthony, Jason Kidd, Kobe Bryant and others were all saying he was the game changer for Spain and that he's gonna be amazing in a few years.

March 19, 2009  10:25 AM ET

He's is extremely good at slashing to the rim, and amazing court awareness. His defense is also quite good, he has an NBA ready defensive game. His jump shooting needs a bit of work, but it will come.

March 19, 2009  10:27 AM ET

Whoever says hes not a good defender is an idiot... he has ridiculous amount of steals, rarely turns the ballover... takes charges extremely well for a PG... those ppl who are sayin he cant defend CLEARLY have never seenhim play, he is one of the better PG defenders out there.

Go on youtube or google and find what Kobe, jason kidd and all the USA team said after playin him...
he will go 2nd or 3rd overall..
and curry wont even be top 10

Ricky Rubio - sounds like a Spanish porn name.

Also, Ricky, Ricky, Ricky... think long term buddy! If you want to come to the NBA, you shouldn't have let your parents sign that multi-year deal with the crazy buyout! DKV knew what they were doing!!!
