Avs owner plans to rebuild

It is a word teams are loathe to use, because it implies the current situation is broken. But Avalanche owner Stan Kroenke used the "R" word when discussing his thoughts on his last-place hockey team. "I think we have some rebuilding to do," Kroenke said. "We've been good for so long, I don't think we've been able to do that. But every now and then you've got to take a deep breath and rebuild. It may be time." Whether general manager Francois Giguere or coach Tony Granato retains his job figures to be a major offseason question. Avalanche president Pierre Lacroix watched much of the game in the owner's suite and did not look like a happy man much of the time. The Avs had no comment on personnel matters, but it is expected that Lacroix will make the call on whether Giguere retains his job.

And what to do with Ryan Smiths untradeable salary...

I kinda miss those Wing/Av games. What a great rivalry and fun to watch. A lot more exciting than the constant bombardmant of Yankee/Red Sox games forced on us by ESPN.

All those high priced players that nobody wants

Avs owner top rebuild? You mean they want to win?

Even as a Yankees fan, I am sick of that. I love when they call it "the greatest rivalry in sports"...I don't remember this being so insane until the last 12 years or so. It was always a regional rivalry, but never at the WWIII level that they bring it up to now...media hype and garbage
.Greatest Rivalry? I submit:
Mich/Ohio State..actually, most of the older college rivalries: Texas/Texas AM..OK/Neb...etc
Bruins/Canadiens
Shall I go on?

Rangers/Islanders is much more fun in NY than Yankees/Red Sox as well.

And is this article an explanation of why the Avs have gone into the Tavares tank? The Isles are so nervous they went and got blown out last night....

That's my favorite sports rivalry of all time. Too bad it's like not really a rivalry anymore.

Any rivalry where the records of the teams truly don't matter is fun.
Rangers/Islanders
Mich/Ohio State leap to mind.

That's what makes it a real rivalry! Pride!

There's nothing wrong with rebuilding if it's done correctly (see Pittsburgh Penguins). However it can be a terrible process if done incorrectly (see Pittsburgh Pirates).

March 26, 2009  11:16 AM ET

Let us not forget the Bears and Packers

Actually, Wings/Avs may not be the dirty scrum it used to be, but the Avs got the better of the Wings this year.

The beauty of most rivalries is that at some point one or both of the teams go through rough period, but the teams still hate each other. Also odd that OSU/Mich is rated as one of the, if not The, top rivalries, but I have always personally put ND/Mich as my top rivalry. I guess I've known too many ND people through the years.

For a couple years there in the late 90's I was lamenting how the Avs were cultivating top young talent (Tanguay, Drury, Hejduk), and that's what was pushing the Avs to the advantage over the Wings. Then came along Datsyuk and Zetterberg and that changed. It's kind of sad to see the attendence so terrible for the Avs games. You'd like to think the Avs can recover, but we'll have to see. Still a great uniform--they did that right and brought great play to Denver when they moved.

March 26, 2009  12:03 PM ET

Well they should start rebuilding with their uniforms. The color combo is brutal!

March 26, 2009  12:03 PM ET

The Avs were done in by the introduction of the salary cap era. Pierre was a big-spender, wheeler-dealer who flourished in the good 'ol days but whose flaws are exposed in the new system (ala Glen Sather!). Time to rebuild the front office (and hire somone to give Ryan Smyth concrete overshoes on a fishing trip 'cause he ain't tradeable with those numbers).

I liked that rivalry but Habs-Nordiques and Oilers/Flames of the past were basically subway series and had more heat than the sun.

Forgot about the 1980's Flames/Oilers...that was vicious...maybe moreso than the Wings/Avs

March 26, 2009  01:15 PM ET

I do feel sorry for them tough. Think about it: top center get long-term injury THEN gets fingers chewed up in a freak accident, next-gen young gun sidelined also for most season, defence in shambles and are playing like they're blind, injury, injury and more injury, everybody on the team is pulling a kovalev, more injury, team going broke and best player on the team is darcy tucker. Somebody in their department definitely ticked off the hockey gods and the proverbial firestorm rained on them
