Calhoun hints at recruiting errors

Jim Calhoun is officially dancing. Not the dance into the NCAA Tournament, the Big Dance, but rather the sidesteps coaches make when their program is in the crosshairs following allegations of NCAA violations, when a hole has been opened and a program's actions are to be judged. When Yahoo! Sports first detailed allegations involving UConn's recruitment of former player Nate Miles, Calhoun referenced the "blog" report and selectively focused on Miles' eligibility to play for the Huskies and not the gist of the report, which was that coaches knew that Josh Nochimson, a former student manager and Connecticut graduate, was advising Miles in a way that made him a sports agent and also violated NCAA guidelines. On Thursday, Calhoun conceded that someone "could have made a mistake," but in the same breath mentioned the size of the NCAA rulebook, as if no one could be expected to understand all those darn NCAA rules. He also intimated that he couldn't be expected to follow the actions of the school's thousands of alumni, as if Nochimson was just any graduate of the school and one who worked within the basketball program for several years, was advising a player he recruited and who, according to Yahoo! Sports, received regular calls from UConn coaches. Calhoun was forced to clarify those remarks Friday, another round of spin as the school and NCAA begin to look into the allegations. He went from talking about the pressure defense he expects to face Saturday against Missouri in the Elite 8 to defending his program and his legacy.

I don't think anyone should speculate until the NCAA hands them a document with violations.

If the NCAA hands the document to UCONN, then it gets worse. If it happens that way UCONN is displaying a lack of institutional control, which has already been vetted by Yahoo. This could get ugly for UCONN. Not being a fan of the do-gooders we call the NCAA, I hate to say that!

Agreed. All we know are "reports" from journalists, and journalists are experts at absolutely nothing.

Jim, maybe some of that "considerably more than $1.6 million" could go toward hiring someone to read the rules.

March 28, 2009  04:21 PM ET

He's guilty. I hope they fire the prick.

Proper response:

We are aggressively evaluating anything that could be a problem for our program and for our beloved institution. The integrity of our school is the most important thing we have and we intend to guard that jealously. Please give us time to complete a thorough and painstaking review. You've seen the NCAA rule book and our diligence requires a great a deal of checking and double checking.

We look forward to meeting with the press to sharing our findings and to communicating the results of our inquiry with the rest of the country as soon as they are completed and vetted. Thank you for your time and understanding.

Agreed. Calhoun's response almost sounds like a confession.

"Jim Calhoun is officially dancing. Not the dance into the NCAA Tournament, the Big Dance..."

Um, he's dancing there, too.

Calhoun is a bufoon and a disgrace to the academic community. His graduation rate is around 22%. I hope the NCAA nails this guy and sends a message to the UConns of the world.
