06:53 AM ET 03.30 | University of Memphis coach John Calipari is open to meeting with officials from the University of Kentucky about its head coaching position and could do so as early as today, according to a source close to the situation. As of Sunday night, Kentucky officials had not contacted Memphis asking permission to speak to Calipari, according to sports information director Lamar Chance. After the Tigers returned Friday from Glendale, Ariz., where they played in a fourth straight Sweet 16 last week, Calipari told reporters that Memphis was "where I want to coach." Yet, he apparently is willing to listen to overtures about the job that came open when Billy Gillispie was fired after just two seasons.

Hmm.... living and coaching in Memphis or Kentucky?? Tough choice, not really.

March 30, 2009  08:20 AM ET

He is the only big name coach that would go there right now. It would be a good fit. You have to believe that Kentucky had someone in place before they fired Gillispie . Calipari has them over a barrel right now. If not him, then the choices are not good. Calipari is still looking for "respect" The job at UK gives him what he desires most; To be on the inside of the coaching fraternity.

I just can't get rid of Calipari. I either have to watch us play him at Memphis or Kentucky. Doh...

March 30, 2009  09:17 AM ET

Memphis' conference is a joke. The SEC, although down this year, is a power conference and would give Calipari the respect he seeks. It's time for Calipari to come and play with the big boys. Kentucky's resources and his recruiting would be a winning combo.

Kentucky would be your obvious choice, right? If not, have you ever spent much time in Memphis?

Better bourbon in Kentucky. Better BBQ in Memphis. Calipari must be a drinker.

We tried. Even Ark wasn't that stupid. We're in the process of moving it south into Miss. Southaven has no idea. Shhhhh.

Please stay out of the SEC, Cal. We prefer to keep all the thugs on our football teams.

I believe he drinks during games with the way he coaches down the stretch sometimes.

Calipari would bring some new energy to UK (just like Billy G did two years ago). What are the odds on UK's next coach making it to Year 4?

why would any coach take that job? They clearly have some unreasonable expectations... If they just kept Tubby Smith everything would be fine right now and they would probably still be a top-tier basketball school. They pressured him out, they fired Gillespie, what would make the new guy think that they weren't going to treat him the same way?

Calipari has one heck of a recruiting class coming to Memphis next year. He probably is going to take the Kentucky job but Henry and Favors are both good enough to get the Tigers to the championship. He's got a tough decision on his hands.

You mean, Henry & Cousins? Favors is going to G-Tech. I think Cousins might leave if Cal does. Henry kinda has no choice because the other school he wanted to go to(Kansas) is out of scholarships & probably will land Stephenson. I kinda doubt Cal will leave with the given circumstances; his best recruiting class ever.

Interesting comments by all, some with class, a lot without it.

I hope Coach Cal stays....but if he leaves, then I say thanks coach for a great ride. No one would've predicted when he came here in 2000 he would've been here for nine years. It's possible he could take those players with him as well. On the other hand he has a kid in high school and in college - he may desire to let them finish out before he moves on. He gets to be the king here, and I think he likes that as well. Who wouldn't?

Memphis would then be an attractive job due to these factors:
We've proven we'll spend BIG money on the right candidate.
You can easily win at Memphis, using the recipe that the great Coach Cal built: Rule CUSA, play a hard non-conference schedule, get top seeds into the NCAA tourney....
The job doesn't come with all the pressure that jobs like the one in Kentucky come with...

Mike Anderson and others would certainly take a look...

As far as what I quoted here from TheNewVols: Being from Memphis, and loving my home town, I appreciate the fact that you don't think much of Memphis and you're certainly entitled to your opinion. I love my hometown: great barbe-que, great atmosphere, whether it's downtown on Beale, Peabody Place, or out in the quiet suburbs. Good people, all of them with class.

Thanks for the classy input though. I always find Vols fans interesting.

What? Keep Tubby Smith....yes at least he got us to the dance but no further....that championship where he was coach of the team at the time I hope you arent thinking that was his doing. That title was won with Pitinos leftovers and after they were gone it was downhill from there...As for your question why would any coach take that job...UK is the PREMIERE coaching position in college basketball.....only one school has more Mens basketball championships than us and that is UCLA and that because Coach Wooden was the master at selling his school to all the big name recruits and it really wasnt that hard since it is Los Angeles after all....

and actually, I do really meet some vols fans that are class acts.
