Maradona strikes back at Pele

07:51 AM ET 03.30 | Diego Maradona has reacted to claims made by Pele that he is not a good role model for children, by declaring that he lost his virginity with a man. The Brazilian legend claimed last week that both Ronaldo and Robinho have taken drugs, and that Maradona is not someone to look up to because of his history with narcotics. The Argentine coach was asked for his thoughts on these statements at a press conference today, and did not twist his words when responding. "What do you want me to say? He debuted (lost his virginity) with a lad (a man)," is what the coach is reported to have said by a host of sources, including Marca. The response prompted plenty of laughter from all the journalists present at the conference but it is unlikely to go down to well with the Brazilian, nor with some onlookers. Pele has already had to track back on his claims that Robinho had taken drugs, after the Manchester City man threatened to take legal action.

You just knew when Maradona took the job that we would eventually see stuff like this.

Once again Maradona speaks, and once again I'm laughing but shaking my head at the same time.

Agreed. It's funny, but really in a sad and juvenile way. Probably the two greatest players ever having a childish spat.

It's not funny, its a rather weak and predictable comeback for a simple minded villain such as Maradona. Really, after about the age of 12, don't the gay put downs get a bit tired? got slander?

Pele-Maradona.....I mean, who's word are you taking? One's the greatest of all time, and one's a drug addict, cheating, non tax playing POS.

This was actually a kind of classy response from Maradona. What else was he to do? Deny it? Argue about it? He just brushed it off with a left-field comment that is obviously to be taken as untrue. So instead of getting into it with Pele, he brushed it off. Great play Diego.

I still can't believe he is coaching Argentina (it can't be that hard). This guy just has no class.

The best youtube clip is winning a match on PKs and the trainer comes over and lets Maradona sniff coke right on the pitch. Classic.

Given his own history and the history of their rivalry, I think you're giving Diego too much credit.

you havent heard?? Pele's retort was a Yo Mama joke... this could get ugly O.o

March 30, 2009  11:32 AM ET

Maradona is psychotic on that Michael Jackson level...too much love no matter the antics

March 30, 2009  12:21 PM ET

Pele's response was "...and Maradona's mother is so fat, she beeps when she backs up. SNAP!"

March 30, 2009  12:26 PM ET

HAHAHAHAHAH THAT IS FUNNY!

One's a man lover, the other a former druggie, and they are arguing over which is worse.

March 30, 2009  12:30 PM ET

Shaq, forget about one upping LeBron with the prestart festivities, how about one upping Pele.

LOL, says the guy with the Borat avatar. Careful you don't trip on your way down off the soapbox.

March 30, 2009  01:37 PM ET

This is ridiculous and I don't see this being true at all, despite the history of Pele-Maradona spats.

Sad and juvenile on the part of both men. True, but have you noticed in recent years how Pele has the habit of creating "controversies". To me that's more sad in a way than Maradona. Sure Diego has been a degenerate drug addict and almost died as a result. Now he's coaching Argentina. Sure he could crash and burn, but he could also become a story of human triumph. Benicio del Toro could play the role in the movie. Pele? The greatest player ever, you notice, is not being asked to coach. What's his excuse?
