USC defense makes new QBs look bad

USC's quarterback competition stalled Friday, though the players vying for the starting job were mostly blameless. There just wasn't much Aaron Corp, Mitch Mustain or Matt Barkley could do to push things forward. Not with defensive linemen constantly in their faces. The defense, which is replacing multiple starters, finally got a taste of success a day after Corp shredded the unit with long scrambles and Mustain and Barkley made several highlight-reel throws. After Thursday's workout, Coach Pete Carroll had tabbed Corp as the early leader in the race to replace Mark Sanchez. Corp, however, broke free only once Friday.

Bueno! Let's go!

April 4, 2009  10:19 AM ET

We won't be as good as we were last year on D. Rest assured we won't be chopped liver either. With our entire O-line and RB corps coming back, look for us to pound the ball alot. I think Corp wins this QB battle. His mobility will be the key when we need to throw. He can make plays with his feet, as well as his arm.

April 4, 2009  11:26 AM ET

So one day Mustain and Barkley make highlight reel throws and Corp shreds the defense with his scrambling, the next day the defense looks better. STOP THE PRESSES AND ALERT THE MEDIA: USC DEFENSE MAKES QB's LOOK BAD!

Should have run the story yesterday with the headline USC QB's MAKE DEFENSE LOOK BAD!

April 4, 2009  11:27 AM ET

No doubt this will be a transitional year for USC. What that translates to on the field remains to be seen. They will no doubt "plug the holes" that graduation left them on defense but I don't see a "seemless" transition at QB. I know you USC "homers" will disagree but this is an ND fans assessment...

April 4, 2009  11:35 AM ET

Why has no USC QB ever won a Super Bowl? Are they all busts in the NFL?

April 4, 2009  12:13 PM ET

Wouldn't it be nice if we were older,
And 'SC's defense owned the field!

C'mon! Sing it!

Sheesh! With a cheer squad known as the Song Girls, you'd think 'SC fans would be more melodic...

Every season has its nice little stories. What if Trojan's D saves their bacon time and again throughout 2009? The talking heads would faint for not wanting to pause for breath!

D-E-F-E-N-S-E!

Imagine... the Rose Bowl... Sports Spewers are already calling 'em the No Name Defense... KJ comes out of retirement for one last broadcast...

Dream Big, Trojans. Ti's the Southern Califonia way.

I guess you think Dan Marino & Archie Manning were busts in the NFL as well?

Meaning no disrespect to Joe Montana, who's probably the best NFL quarterback to ever step on the field, but this is a CFB thread. USC has won a half dozen or so consecutive conference championships (granted it's PAC 10, which is an easier feat than SEC or Big 12, etc.), been in the national championship discussions for each of those years, won a couple of NC's, came within 13 seconds of winning a third (I would like to point out, as an aside, that the NC loss was to my school), and their recent recruiting successes indicate that they aren't slowing down any time soon. Notre Dame, over this same period...................??? Perhaps this is part of the reason why, when we dump on USC or Pete Carroll, thier fans respond with a bemused disdain, while, when we critique ND or Jabba the Weis, a**h***s like you rant and rave like rabid dogs.

Congrats on getting your PhD, Bubba. Or does your new title refer to the game you've been playing with coeds?

I tend to agree with you that it's been kinda slow as far as CFB news goes.

Better switch to de-caf JRM74. How in the world you tied that dudes USC Super Bowl comments into one of your ND rants is beyond me. The guy's point has nothing to do with what USC has accomplished on the collegiate level or do you just look for opportunities to try and run down the Irish...? Come on, from many of your past comments I expect more substance from you...

April 4, 2009  12:47 PM ET

Oh Gariboy, the pipes, the pipes are calling...

I have insider information. Dude was posting bunch of venom on a ND thread. Trust me, he's a domer.

Hmmm... Off the subject?

OK! Bill McCartney! Carl James! 5th down against Mizzou! Dishonor! Foreshadowing the end of the Big Eight!

Georgia Tech! 11-0-1!* Rightful claimants to the 1990 National Championship!

*Bobby Ross' shining moment

There are probably alot of programs across the country that would consider a USC transitional year a success.

Now the plugging holes thing I believe is some sort of freshman initiation.

And while we are in this aside, the Bigfoot in mouth award to the AP voters for "awarding" the 1990 Buffs their "crown." We should still hold that over every sportswriter on the beat and force them to buy the house a round whenever we encounter one or more at a watering hole.

Stewart Mandell was too young to vote in 1991, right?
