UConn coach Jim Calhoun, who has won two national championships, was crushed by the loss to Michigan State. That, coupled with the frustration over allegations that his program violated recruiting rules in luring Nate Miles, had him hinting about the possible end of an era. "Those kind of things, that's why Dean Smith told me at 67 he got out," the 66-year-old Calhoun said. "It wasn't basketball. It was the other things. "I love the kids, love the game. I don't plan to go anyplace. But I'm going to give a lot of reflection, maybe more reflection than normal because of that."

First of all,Calhoun is delusional if he thinks that his name should be mentioned in the same breath as coach Smith.Hes leaving the game because he was busted for cheating. Its that simple.

It is always a little scary when someone refers to themselves by their own name. I think it is time. I know that I am always a little ticked when people on here think they know what 50yearfan is all about.

why is he any less of a coach than Smith ?
He took a NOTHING program and has built it into a top 5 one
- he has as many rings as Smith
- Smith took over an ESTABLISHED program

Nothing against Dean Smith- but what Calhoun did at Uconn
was simply amazing......Uconn was NOTHING before he got there

Worked for Julius Casaer.

Until the 44 Senators each stabbed him with their knives. "Et tu Brute."

But he had the month July named after him. So it sort of evens out in my book.

Dean Smith didn't walk away because he was a dooshbag that got caught up in a cheating scandal. But, I digress.

Has anyone forgot this dude has serious health problems? lol.

April 5, 2009  08:29 PM ET

If it comes out that Uconn was guilty of serious violations then he is a dirtbag if he walks away. Definitely a great coach, done alot of terrific things. Making a mess and leaving it for someone else to clean up??? Not a good move.

The State of Connecticut would lose its highest paid citizen. That can't be good for the economy.

Um, but won't the second highest paid citizen become the highest paid citizen?

Is that Milton or Keynes?

If he moves out of state, then the pension dollars don't circulate. If he stays in the state, they circulate and if he is replaced by someone from out of the state the those salary dollars can the be shown to be the reason why I majored in physics.

Emphasis on "CHEATING." Uconn still would be nothing if he used only his coaching skills. Dean done it the right way!
