Will Giants pay ace Lincecum?

Tim Lincecum is ready to put on a show when the Giants open the season Tuesday. But are the Giants ready to show him the money? Giants president Larry Baer said the club would remain open to negotiating a multiyear extension with Lincecum during the season. The reigning National League Cy Young award winner had signed a one-year, $650,000 contract last month. General manager Brian Sabean said his staff has researched the potential parameters of a deal that would take Lincecum through his arbitration years; an industry source speculated that the structure would exceed the three-year, $20.5 million deal that World Series MVP Cole Hamels signed with the Phillies in January. For now, Sabean called the Lincecum talks a "back-burner issue."

Big mistake if they don't pay him. He's not another Zito.

April 6, 2009  08:09 AM ET

if zito is worth 126 mil then lincy must be worth about......9 billion bucks....anyway he should get more than hamels hes a better pitcher...

April 6, 2009  08:58 AM ET

why in the world would you not pay him?

April 6, 2009  09:05 AM ET

THE YANKEES WILL PAY HIM!!

April 6, 2009  09:34 AM ET

Sabean: Get it done. Save us from the horror of FN articles for the next five years of speculating whether Lincecum will be a Yankee/Red Sock and uninformed comments from people who do not understand when free agency starts.

lincecum needs to provide 6 years of mlb service to san fran before he can hit the open market

April 6, 2009  09:52 AM ET

I agree with the guy who brought up Zito. When they masde that deal no one thought Zito was worth it but they did it without batting an eye. Now you have a chance to keep the best pitcher in the NL and youre not sure about it?

April 6, 2009  10:09 AM ET

They will sign him. They have a good, young team. Lincecum is the corner stone of that team. Keep in mind, they were considering throwing a big chunk of change a Manny this off season.

Ole Timmy boy will get some money........just maybe not with the giants...

April 6, 2009  11:05 AM ET

Im not a Giants fan but, they should sign him. He is one of only a few things that go right for the Giants. Sign him long term, hes gonna be a great pitcher for many years to come.

As a diehard Giants fan, get ready... I hope Sabean doesn't sign him. If King Midus has the magic touch, Sabean has the taboo touch. Just look at every signing Sabean has done this decade-99% busts or overpaid. When they fire his lame self, hopefully the new Giants GM will pay Tim accordingly. Sucks that Billy Beane is across the Bay.

April 6, 2009  12:18 PM ET

let me see if i have this straight. they gave the cy young 650k for this year? not exactly positioning themselves to sign the guy for a hometown discount down the road. don't insult the man, sabean. you need him.

yeah, they don't seem to have a good front office. tell you what, won't have to worry about it, after the 650k insult for this year gotta wonder if lincecum has any intention of signing a long term deal with this team.

Too bad Giants! The Brew Crew is gonna sweep in and nab this sucka. Screw getting a lefty stud.

April 6, 2009  12:53 PM ET

He should get a deal like Hamels next year. He's one of the game's young studs, and if his agent is any good, he'll get him the deal. All of the other young studs are getting deals, and it works out usually for both sides.

April 6, 2009  01:10 PM ET

If I was Sabean, I'd be a little worried about giving him a long-term contract. With his violent pitching motion, it's got Tommy John surgery written all over it. I'd give him a 4-yr deal which will take care of his arbitration years, but I wouldn't give him a 6 or 7 year deal.

Surely you are drunk

April 6, 2009  01:46 PM ET

He is a good pitcher but he shouldnt get a Hamels-like deal. Tim won the CY Young but Hamels won both the NLCS and the WS MVP. Hamels got a good deal because he produced. Tim produces but hes on a bad team.

Talk about all time bargains, 650K for a top 3 pitcher in baseball.....unreal
