Riley Cote has been KO'd for the season. Ten days after dislocating his right ring finger in a fight with New York Islanders rookie Joel Rechlicz, Cote underwent surgery Tuesday that will sideline for 10-12 weeks. Cote, the Flyers leader in penalty minutes with 174 before the arrival of Daniel Carcillo, injured his finger when he got it caught in the jersey of Rechlicz during a tugging match March 28. He returned to the lineup six nights later against the Toronto Maple Leafs, but re-injured the finger when he was hooked in the hand. Baltimore hand specialist Dr. Tom Graham performed Tuesday's surgery. "He went to see Dr. Graham with the idea that if it was going to continue to happen very easily like that he'd have the surgery to repair it," Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said. Cote, 27, has two more years ($562,000 each) remaining on his contract with the Flyers. In 63 games this season he recorded no goals, three assists and was a minus-7. With Cote out, the Flyers have a few options for their fourth line. Andreas Nodl is playing there now with center Darroll Powe and Carcillo. In 35 games for the Flyers, Nodl has one goal, three assists and is a minus-12.

No big whoop. He wouldn't have contributed much in the playoffs and Carcillo can provide the toughness along with a bit of offense and forechecking. He's been losing a lot of fights lately anyway.

They usually scratch these type of guys for the playoffs anyway, so...

April 8, 2009  09:16 AM ET

I also don't see it being too much of a problem, I do like carcillo, his has 3 goals and 11 assists (3 pts against the Rangers in 4 games) and I think will be a much bigger contributor than Cote

April 8, 2009  09:25 AM ET

This actually may help the Flyers... No biggie.

April 8, 2009  10:08 AM ET

Goons have no real role in then Playoffs anyway, no big whoop.

Canes fans? Are they not things of myths? I haven't seen one since 06'...They're more rare than a Capitals fan in the PreOviean Era. (thought to be extinct before 07-08', but now have seemed to procreate in massive numbers!)

This is great news for the Flyers. Seriously, Cote would have been a liability in any playoff game anyway.

April 8, 2009  01:13 PM ET

Riley Cote is not needed, Daniel Carcillo brings more to the table.

I don't know just because one Idiot makes a stupid comment about a team doesn't necessarily make them a rival fan, just a moron. Case in point Gunslinger, he hates Crosby (Whoa!, I know) just as most of Flyers fan dislike him. (based soley on his numbers vs Philly, and I'm sure a few more ignorant ones may throw in "Diver" or "crybaby") I guess what I mean is I don't like to assign stupidness to a said team, because one could turn around and say Gunslinger is a Flyers fan.

MoReese - Great game last night against Boston (Woulda loved to see Thomas play), I think its a shame Ottawa missed the playoffs, the way they've been playing lately I'd love to see how far they could go.
