Lightning to be aggressive with free agents

During a question-and-answer session with former and prospective season-ticket holders before Tuesday's game, Lightning general manager Brian Lawton told the group that the team intends to dip into the free-agent waters again this summer, particularly to upgrade the defense. "The reality is our blue line has been really weak from the start. Now we've been ravaged with injuries to guys like Andrej Meszaros and Paul Ranger, but even with those guys we have to do a better job with our D," Lawton said. "We will be active and aggressive on our blue line once again this summer. And with Ranger, Meszaros, Matt Lashoff and Matt Smaby, who has really started to come on, we feel that we have a foundation that we can build off of."

Will the free agents want to go to this circus is the problem...

That's exactly right.

However, I'm a firm believer that wth the right type of negotiator, and tactics, anything is possible. I've found that honesty is always best. Let the player and his agent know what your ultimate goal is, and how you will go about achieving it. You can have an absolutely awful team, but if you have a goal, and a plan, most guys will come on board if they feel it will work.

Right now, I don't think the Bolts have a firm plan. This season might have been a blip on the radar or they might just blow up what they have now.

Being aggressive in free agency isn't always the best way to build a team.

April 8, 2009  09:51 AM ET

weren't they aggressive in free agency last summer and looked how well that worked out?
the only way they can get guys to go there right now is by throwing lumps of money at them and giving players contracts that are too good for them and therefore can't refuse. last time i checked they will receive $14 mil in revenue sharing and they still will lose money. they cripple themselves with these bad contracts. vinny, marty, and stamkos are their only tradeable assests. ryan malone is too much of a cap hit and after that they have no one else. i still see vinny leave by july 1.
they clearly don't have a plan. lawton, barrie, and koules all have their own plan. there's no cohesion or unity among that group.

Going after one or two solid Dmen wouldn't be a bad proposition.

perhaps some of this new found aggression should have been used..I don't know...in games?

the only Bolts worth keeping are the goalie Smith, Vinnie (both had recent surgery that will be fully healed come training camp), Stamkos and Marty (teams best player bar none), and that huge tank on two legs, Evigny Artukeyn...everyone else is up for trade possibilities. Never been a big Vinnie fan (cherry picker central), but if he's been injured all year and no one knew about it, and still gutted it out then kudos to him.

i went to the pre-season fan appreciation day at the St Pete Times Forum, and (ignorant me) thought that with new ownership, new coach, new roster (almost from A-Z), that a ton of folks would show up and get to hear from them...i'd say little more than 250 people showed up. i mentioned to my friends that this is not a good sign, and dark clouds started to roll in at that point in particular.

I went to the Pens/Bolts game last night, and if the Bolts (and Pens!) played the 3rd Period like they did last night, they'd both be better respected and appreciated. talk about hard hitting, fast paced and crashing the net. Sounds like a regular Flyer game eh? GO PENS/BOLTS!

Better to be in than watching no?

April 8, 2009  11:46 AM ET

I hear the Bolts will also be training in the off-season to be more aggressive 'on the ice' next season...but I still want to see if Vinny asks for a trade. The place is a circus the only great thing about it is you can go there to get a suntan...not that that is a healthy decision these days either...Oh well...(sigh)

After that 1-0 "heart attack" game on Saturday, it could be a long series
LGP is right though, better in than out

We still have an outside shot at 7th and the Caps. Habs have 2 games that I think they will lose. It's too bad the games mean a lot to the Flyers for home ice in the 1st round. Gotta come out more agressively in the 1st period though. If Montreal didn't look so tired in the first period, they could have scored 2 or 3 goals the way Staal and Dubbie kept giving the puck to them.

The Bolts are a mess. Their management is the Three Stooges. They blew this year up by signing all kinds of expensive has-beens and never-were types. Then, they beging floating rumours that they are entertaining offers for their greatest player, and for their future franchise player. Now, they are declaring to spend more wasteful cash on free agents, when rumblings have them cash-strapped and attendance-starved. I am glad the Fuhrer, Mr. Bettman keeps billionaires out of the league like Balsillie and lets kooks like this group in, who cannot conduct a business to save their lives... all Hail Tiny Gary!

April 8, 2009  01:17 PM ET

Prospective season-ticket holders, eh? Aren't you supposed to tell them anything they want to hear anyway?

April 8, 2009  02:48 PM ET

Im laughing at Averys antics because hes on my team and hes been one of their best players. I just dont understand why noone has taken an old style justice to his face yet. Can you imagine someone smacking the goalie in the lid with Probert or McSorley on the ice in the good ole days?

April 8, 2009  06:54 PM ET

isn't trying to sign every free agent on the market how they got into their current mess?
