No boundaries for new Memphis coach

Arizona and Arizona State get ready, because Memphis' new hire, Josh Pastner, will be all over this state, looking to steal away the best basketball talent. Not just Tennessee or Florida or Texas or California or New York. As Arizona's grandfather of club ball, Art Dye of the Stars said, "He'll recruit the Earth." Indeed. Pastner, the former UA player and assistant coach who was Richard Jefferson's roommate during the 2000-01 Final Four season, is perpetual recruiting energy, finding a new gear just when you thought he ran out of gas. He's laid-back cool on the outside. But this guy is constantly working the phones, checking out every little lead, uncovering players and then quickly luring them in with his charm. Every time I'd run into him at a high school game over the past several years, Pastner would ask my opinion on top players. Pastner already has 6-foot-7 eighth grader Torin Jones, a basketball freak of nature, on his radar. Jones is headed for Chandler Basha to begin his high school career next season.

April 8, 2009  09:07 AM ET

6 foot 7 and in the 8th grade? DAMN!

April 8, 2009  09:29 AM ET

lol...he can go recruit all he wants-
it's another thing if he can close the deal

April 8, 2009  10:33 AM ET

We know he's in the eighth grade but.........does he shave yet?

Steal is right. Cause they ain't coming voluntarily.

As promised by Tiger High AD R.C. Johnson, Memphis made a "WOW" hire. Sorry, make that a "WHO?!?!" hire.
Pastner might turn out to be a good coach, but hiring someone with only assistant coaching experience isn't generally the way to keep a program prominent nationally.

especially for a program that needed desperately to stay relevant NOW, because in that weak conference...they will NEVER be on national TV again

Conferences are made by players not coaches, the weak conferences that you all talk about could be powerhouses if the players that were recruited excepted. Would anyone have considered,Cleveland a powerhouse before Lebron.

Wow, big and bold statements from a University nobody cared about before and after Calipari left. If they really want to make a dent in getting recruits, their boosters better be ready to fork over some serious cash and gifts to these recruits.

He's one of the top recruiters in the country. You get to be that by closing deals.....duh! Your always talking trash about Memphis (statements that make no sense or have any truth).......go back to your rock.

Your a Cal fan.............are you relevant in anything? Sad, because you play in a BCS league, and you still get shown up by the likes of Memphis.

Do some homework on Memphis basketball.

Arizona was going to hire him if they did not get Miller. He has been a assistant for 7 years under Olsen and Calipari. Most NBA players that he has helped tried to help him land the Arizona job. He was the highest paid assistant last year.......why, because he knows what he is doing. Do some homework on Pastner.

Don't worry abut us Hillbilly High, we will be just fine. Worry about your overrated male **** of a coach. Have you been to Alimoney lately?

April 8, 2009  06:01 PM ET

Yea, ppl talk a lot of bs abt stuff they don't know about. Do you really think Calipari or the guys he had working behind the scenes for him, landing him recruits is gonna let Memphis slip? LOL @ that. How long do you have to be an assistant before you can take over a mid major program? LOL. Get freaking real!

Ouch.

I wish Memphis would step up to a BCS conference because there is just as much basketball talent in Memphis as any other city, probably more. I hope this guy does good.

"Overrated" or not, Pearl turned down a pretty hefty offer from Tiger High, and accepted a LOT less money than Memphis offered to extend his contract at UT. Some folks apparently think Memphis is an armpit. Not me, though-- I like the BBQ and blues there.
As for Alimony'$-- pretty funny business name. Apparently Pearl's ex is doing very well with that-- they just expanded the business only a couple of months after opening it.

Memphis never even spoke to Pearl....it was bad reporting or a smart business move by Pearl.

Too funny.

Sure, keep telling yourself that, and eventually it will be true.

April 9, 2009  10:49 PM ET

When Memphis hired Coach Cal, you knew they were in business. When Coach Cal left, they went a got someone younger who was similar to Coach Cal. Maybe Coach Cal had a recommendation for the new hire.

Do ya think!

We NEVER offered any contract or had direct communication with him. It was a story in the Memphis paper that stirred the pot. Memphis fans were pissed when we "thought" the univeresity was talking to Pearl. Nobody wanted that clown.
