06:55 AM ET 04.09 | Cory Clouston will be back as the Ottawa Senators head coach next season. Clouston was given a two-year contract by owner Eugene Melnyk Wednesday morning. No financial details were disclosed. Clouston had been serving as interim coach since replacing Craig Hartsburg on Feb. 2, posting a record of 19 wins, 10 losses and three overtime defeats. "A lot of people get skeptical when you hire a rookie coach and throw him into the fire and say, 'Try and fix something that's wrong,' and it speaks to character when somebody steps up and says, 'I will do it,'" said Senators owner Eugene Melnyk at a press conference. When he appointed coach, Clouston had been coaching the Senators' farm team in Binghamton of the American Hockey League. General manager Bryan Murray said Clouston "has done a remarkable job, really. He has made (players) accountable. They work hard in practice every day. Our style, our philosophy towards the game, is quite different, what it should be for this group of people."

Well, you gotta think this is Murray's last go at this. He is out of excuses now, because this guy has proven he can coach - proven it enough to get this contract at the very least. Good on him too. BUt I think there must be something there, if the team owner - Melnyk - felt the need to be at the press conference as well. To me, it means he was in on the decision, which means he is either planning on getting rid of Murray soon, or he doesn't trust his decision making, which doesn't bode well for Murray either. Congrats to Clouston though, for sure

Melnyk is at any conference that involves a signing. It isn't a big deal. As far as Bryan Murray's job being safe, it isn't. This is his last chance. If the Senators don't have a 100 point season and good showing in the playoffs next year, Murray is out. Ottawa has proven they can be a top team in this league under Cory Clouston, so if it goes sour...

19-10 is a very respectable record. The Sens have certainly turned it up since he arrived...but can they sustain that level of play over an entire season? The jury is still out on this one for me. The Sens have benefitted from playing with nothing on the line over that period which needs to be added to the equation. Still, I would like their future much better if they dump Donald Duck as their GM.

That photo above kind of reminds me of Jim Carey's mask character for some reason, except for the colour.

Clouston did a decent job as of lately. Let's give him a chance and fire hime next December if needed.
It will be interesting to see what moves Ottawa will make this summer.

Poor Hartsburg. That junk team screwed him hard and he knows it.

Hartsburg is getting paid by the Sens at least....along with 2 other head coaches now...lmao.

Not a bad deal considering they're getting paid and not working.

I partially agree. Ottawa is definately not a junk team, but they definately did not want to play for Craig Hartsburg.

I'm willing to place money that Ottawa doesn't make 1 big move this summer, and here's my reasoning;

1. Cory Clouston has proven that this team can get the job done.
2. No one is willing to take on any Ottawa Senator player contract. Not after this season.
3. One issue has already been dealt with (jury is still out for obvious reasons), goaltending.
4. The forwards are in good shape, now that they play a system they like.
5. The Brass like the defence apperently, Phillips, Volchenkov, Kuba, Lee, Picard, Bell, Campoli
6. Their salary cap position won't allow any significant moves.
7. I think Ottawa fields these lines next season; Neil and Comrie will be gone.

Heatley, Spezza, Alfredsson
Foligno, Fisher, Shannon
Donovan, Kelly, Regin
Ruutu, Winchester, Schubert
Bass
(Smith, Zubov, Hennessey, O'Brien) - AHL Call-Ups

Phillips, Volchenkov
Kuba, Picard
Campoli, Lee
Bell
(Carkner) - AHL Call-Up

Leclaire, Elliott
(Auld) - AHL Call-Up - Elliott could be the man in the AHL next year though.

Donald Duck...
LMAO!

they'll still suck next year...

April 9, 2009  08:26 PM ET

hartsburg didnt get screwed, hes still getting paid and will probly get a buyout for the rest of his contract.... the truth is he was the wrong man for the job.... he didnt install any type of system offensive or defensive... he tried breaking up the big three which has never worked and he couldnt see right of the bat that Auld was better then gerber.... he might be a nice guy and a good junior coach but he doesnt do well in the bigs.... you have to play to your strengths in the nhl and he never installed a system to take advantage of the speed and skill the sens have.... harts didnt make many good decisions as the coach, but the biggest gaf was murray picking him over deboer.... someone fire the spitter.....

neil will still be there moe... i think shubert is gone.... i dont think clouston cares for his play....

lee, picard, bell and karllson will battle for 3 spots... i think karllson will get a spot just because the sens want to see what he can do and will probly throw him to the wolves to find out...

leclaire and auld to start..... just because elliot will play lots in the A and he has a 2way deal i believe... he is still the goalie of the future if leclaire cant come back strong after knee surgery or auld leaves after his contract is over next season.

April 9, 2009  08:27 PM ET

wow H&S.... been a long time.... i've missed your sens bashing.... its not the same without it....lol
