Minnesota return not in Modano's future

For those hoping former North Star Mike Modano, 38, would return to Minnesota for his final seasons in the NHL, forget it. The Stars plan to keep Modano in Dallas. Don't be surprised, however, if Mikko Koivu's brother Saku of the Montreal Canadiens ends up with the Wild next season via free agency.

Why would anyone want to play for the Tame?

Gabby will be gone after this season.

Congrats on a wonderful career, Mike.

Go North Stars!!!!!!

That would be the only team that would have any kind of brains if they signed Koivu. The guy's game is gone - and it was overrated to begin with. I find it not surprising at all that he all of a sudden turned it on at the end of the season - hoping Habs fans would forget how streaky and undependable he is - and parlaying it into another contract with Montreal that he doesn't deserve. Signing him in Minny - for cheap - to keep Mikko happy is the only smart signing involving Saku I can think of. Plus, he can always blame the defensive scheme Minny plays for yet another season of decreased scoring - also, it seems like a team willing to forgive its players missing a lot of time as well. A perfect fit for Saku Koivu, all in all. I'd say he's the most overrated player in the NHL, but I think everyone finally knows he's garbage now.

This St. Paul Pioneer Press... what kind of a Sports section do these guys have? They make up all kinds of nonsense... and their articles are no more than 5 lines to boot. It's like a grade 7 student wrote this pile of dung.

What is it with you people?
The Habs and Koivu have not turned anything on at the "end of the season'!
They played some really poor competition over their 'preceived hot streak' and now that's been laid to rest over the last 2 games. However GoCan, Koivu is not the most over-rated player in the NHL by a long shot. His only real problem is he lacks the size it takes to play 'his game' night in and night out but he does have the heart of a lion. The Habs are not a very good team in spite of what some might think and at the risk of repeating myself, the severely over-achieved last season. They are a small team with a load of F/A's coming up, inconsistant, unproven goal tending, identity issues and the always tempermental and egotistical, softy in Kovalev in the middle of the dressing room, who is probably the number one cause of why Carbo lost his job. Remember they didn't want him on the Russian team? Someone knew what they were doing with that decision. Further, now they have ownership questions to be answered as well as who will stand behind the bench.
Now then...is my post longer than yours Go? :)

If Mike plays anywhere it's in Dallas. No one want to play for the Wild and that's another team that should be making a behind the bench move. Solid franchise with strong fan support deserves better.

Useless post, T&R. Mike playing anywhere else than in Dallas is like Sakic playing for the Wings...

Agreed on both counts.

Mikko Koivu is nasssty! MIN would be a good fit for Saku for obvious reasons. I'd be glad to see him out of MTL for sure, that poor guy is way too good for that city.

Mikey Mo ain't never leavin' Dallas. He's here to stay. That'd be like Aikman leaving for the Skins!

the way the Avs are looking next year, Sakic should be calling Ken Holland ASAP.

Baun-ded, you ARE NOT defending Saku Koivu! Come on!

I was not saying the Habs have picked it up - far as I am concerned they are first round fodder if they make the Show - but KOIVU's numbers have jumped in the last month of his contract year. I see no heart in his play, and I watch alot of Habs games. You guys are remembering the Koivu from 7 years ago, when he had cancer and came back. Now he is an overpaid, streaky, mostly heartless player who is likely the worst captain in the NHL (definitely on the list of 5 worst). He was inspirational 10 years ago - what does he bring to the table now? 45 pts a year? Strong leadership that cost his coach a job because he couldn't/wouldn't get his team in line and winning? Streaky scoring that only seems to show up when the Montreal papers bring up how s****y he is? He may not be the most overrated, but its only because people have all realized how poor a player he truly is. Kovalev may be the poster boy for pestulence and lacking heart, but his captain ain't much better.

With talk like that, you should be calling your bodyguard ASAP.

Too bad, I personally would have loved something like that.

Congratulations Mike on doing the American hockey player proud in your long career with the Stars (North or otherwise)!

Actually GoCan...45 pts is pretty slim and exagerated on your part. He is a Finn & he is one of the NHL's current better ones. He has a .83 ppg average over the last 6 yrs & is a plus 5 this season... He is small for a center at 5'10" 182lbs and yes I agree at age 34 he may be losing a step and I doubt will pick up another 4.750 contract again. That said, for over-rated and being a Finn- See Olie Jokinsen at 5.250 & minus 12. I would have to refute your comment that Saku lacks heart though. Are you sure you weren't thinking Kovalev instead?

Here's a great thought! Gaborik signs with the Dallas Stars and Modano goes back to
Minnesota to finish his pro hockey years where it all started. Sounds awesome-- for Dallas! :)

Why would that be awesome for Dallas? They'd lose the face of their franchise and most well-known player ever, and they'd gain Marian "Glass Jar" Gaborik. I fail to see the benefit.

Face of the franchise? When I think of hockey in Dallas, I think of Ed Belfour. Is that wrong? I feel shame just typing it.

Belfour was really good in Dallas. I think of Modano first, though. Then I think of Ken Hitchcock's chins. Then I think of Brendan Morrow dating (and eventually marrying) Guy Carbonneau's daughter while they were teammates on Dallas' Cup team.
