Memphis still chasing top PG

07:08 AM ET 04.09 | Josh Pastner, the new Memphis coach, has at least one thing going for him. He's a friend of Brian Clifton, a mentor to heavily recruited point guard John Wall, and has already made clear to Clifton that he wants to keep trying to persuade the Raleigh Word of God senior to play basketball at Memphis. Pastner, 31, was named today to succeed John Calipari as head coach. A week ago, Calipari left Memphis to take the head-coaching job at Kentucky, and Clifton then thought Pastner, an assistant to Calipari at Memphis, would follow his boss to UK. Upon learning of Calipari's job change, Wall told The N&O's Tim Stevens last week tha, while he was still considering Memphis, he no longer had a "leader" among his main college choices -- Memphis, Duke, N.C. State, Kansas, Baylor and Miami. Clifton, who heads D-One Sports, the summer program Wall plays for, said he got a call Monday from Pastner about getting the Memphis job and that Pastner asked him whether it was OK to continue his recruitment of Wall.

Why does he have to ask for permission, is that what coaches do? I'm not tryna be sarcastic, it's a serious question.

Maybe he'll go to UNC? Him, Strickland, Henson, and Davis? Woooweeee!

Pastner is apparently a solid recruiter but for some reason I really can't see John Wall leaving the State of North Carolina.

he may leave NC, but he ain't going to memphis now.....

Parole officers.

HAHAHAHAHAHA Priceless!!

That smokey the bear is an Alabama smoky the bear. They had to bring in extra security at UAB because of what a few thug UAB fans did last year after they lost. BTW: Not disrespecting all UAB fans just the few that acted like ****.

Memphis will be fine as a basketball program. Even with the current team (without Evans), we are still a top 25 team......that came from Andy Katz. Pastner has already hit the ground running. Will we land Wall or Henry? Its possible (we are in the mix and Pastner was the guy who recruited him), but probably not.

Smart move to try and keep the recruits coming in.....

LOL! of the day.

It's not Smokey The Bear, it's Smokey Bear. You don't see him a lot anymore; turns out, his policy of preventing/putting out every forest fire was ecologically unsound.

Yeah. Odd how that works. Smokey actually starts the fires now.

I live out here where your Government started that Cierro Grande Fire. Burned out 400 families. Some trivia: by way of "My bad - sorry!" those good people got an extension on filing their taxes. Very touching story.

Thanks for the fact check.

How is that funny? Do you know anything about Memphis basketball and our fan base? Do you know about our returning players, and the other recruits that have stayed committed?

April 10, 2009  01:07 PM ET

nah, tnzazz, they don't know. It's just easy for them to dog the schools they consider "inferior". I guess they get tired of taking it from schools who, by their own standards of treatment, give them crap all the time (Kentucky and UCLA). lmao...that ought to get some responses...

April 10, 2009  01:49 PM ET

Memphis shouldnt even worry about it. Henry is on his way to KU along w/his brother....possibly even Wall.

With Cal gone, Memphis can forget this one.
