Bruins to play at Fenway

The Bruins, lobbying for months to bring the NHL's Winter Classic to Boston, have been given the go-ahead by commissioner Gary Bettman's office to host the game Jan. 1, 2010, despite mild, perfunctory protestations from Causeway Street that plans for the popular New Year's Day game have yet to be finalized. Pending a last-second hiccup, the game will be staged at the near century-old Fenway Park, with its iconic Green Monster serving as the backdrop to the boards, Plexiglas, and 85- by 200-foot sheet of ice. The league gave the Bruins the official go-ahead Wednesday night. According to a source familiar with negotiations involving the NHL, players, and the Bruins, Boston likely will host either the Washington Capitals or the Philadelphia Flyers. It has long been rumored that the next Jan. 1 game would include a Canadian-based team, with the Montreal Canadiens the probable partner for a game in the Hub of Hockey.

If it is Boston vs Montreal at Fenway, that'll be the biggest success of this format. 2 of the original 6 teams, 2 cities with a very long history between each other and 2 rabid fanbases.

Bruins vs Caps.........that would be a fun game to watch!

April 10, 2009  07:45 AM ET

Wait, let me change that. I want to see the Pens because they are the GREATEST and Cindy is the GREATEST and Pittsburgh fans are the GREATEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

April 10, 2009  08:11 AM ET

Stupid idea. That would be the worst place in the world to watch a hockey game.

April 10, 2009  08:12 AM ET

Actually any baseball stadium is a bas idea....it should be a football stadium that surrounds the ice.

April 10, 2009  08:28 AM ET

Let the Briuns play the Red Wings so we can all see what a octopi looks like being launched from the top of the green monster and landing on the ice.

lol @ GunSlinger...I can't even take him seriously anymore so I appreciate the comic relief. I just don't like the idea of hockey games played in baseball stadiums. I am still holding out hope for Flyers vs. Pens at Beaver Stadium...I think the state of Pennsylvania might explode if that ever happened

Agreed 100%

This is a great place to have the next Winter Classic but there are only 2 teams the NHL should consider as the Bruins opponents : 1) The NY Rangers for the obvious baseball connection between these two cities and the opportunity of a back end home and home a couple years down the line held at Yankee Stadium; 2) The Montreal Canadians because over the years they have proved to be the most hated rival and the Canadians to the Bruins are what the Yankees are to the Red Sox.

I agree! The location of the two cities makes it easily accessible for both fan bases. From a pure hockey tradition standpoint, the match up of Montreal v Boston makes more sense... But in actual TV dollars and hype, the NY v Boston match up would be a bigger draw

Why? What basis do you have for that comment? Apparently the game at Wrigley was awesome....

The game at Wrigley was awesome and for the most part the views were good. I can't imagine that the outfield seats had the best views but you would have the same problem in a football stadium with the seats by the end zone.

I think all the original 6 stuff is overblown, the Rangers and Habs would be cool to see, but the Caps have one of the most exciting teams in the league to watch, I would vote Bruins/Caps.

This would be the best match-up by far. B's and Habs, what more needs to be said?

Its gotta be the Canadiens

Anyone see the Bruins-Habs game last night?
What a beauty...as it was described on the final goal...
Quote "Recchi and Patrice Bergeron, who had a goal and two assists for Boston, combined for the winning goal. Recchi tipped the puck past Price after Bergeron stole the puck from Maxim Lapierre at Montreal's blue line." unquote.
Stole the puck?!!! Really now...lets give credit where it's due...
Bergeron nailed Lapierre with a check that was solid enough to change his postal code, then took the puck. Beauty feed to Recchi for the tip. Nice finish Bruins!
Now of course...with the playoffs starting...it's possible that the Habs could upset the Bruins or even the Capitals...right?.....Yeah...and Steve Urkel might resume his career as a co-ordinated, smooth talking ,velvet tongued devil and top ten dresser on a reprise of Family matters too...

The Flyers would make the best opponent, but the league will choose the Caps to make sure there is a bigger audience dragged in by AO - take that Don "The Clown" Cherry. I hope he celebrates each of his goals just to annoy your xenophobic feelings.
