Miami's local recruiting eroding?
Cover your eyes Canes fans, or just turn away. What you are about to read might burn your eyes and cause your blood pressure to rise. Consider this your final warning. Outsiders are beginning to make serious recruiting inroads into South Florida. Did you hear me? There's been a breach in the Great Wall of Canes. The green and orange protective layer that used to shield the hearts of players born in the area codes of the 954 and 305 is beginning to disappear like the ozone. And if the University of Miami isn't careful, the hole could get bigger. The intrduers could end up becoming permanent residents. It may only be the second week of April -- 10 months before anything becomes official on the next National Signing Day. But there are serious signs the old Miami mystique is evaporating. The truth is outsiders have been working hard to make advances for years, and they aren't just knocking on the door anymore. They're busting through it and really are getting into the mind of local players once considered untouchable.

I've heard speculation that Miami may not have the size or the resources to compete for recruits long term with FSU or some of the SEC schools. Anyone close to the situation see any reason for Miami to have long term concerns, or is this just a cyclical thing?

The whole "mystique" thing in college football is a thing of the past (just ask Michigan, Notre Dame, Miami and several other storied programs). Blue chippers will go where they will play quickly, get maximum exposure and win. To succeed in recruiting today you need to sell top players on what a program "is" not what it "was" (and this is coming from a long time ND fan).

So much for Shannon trying to do the right thing. Maybe he should bring back 2 Live Crew and open the Miami checkbook.

Did we ever figure out where this picture was taken? Doesn't look like Miami. Shannon looks like it may be an away game against Wisconsin or something. Or maybe the frozen tundra of College Park, MD.

There is a wall around the State of Miami.. we get who we want from dade/broward/palm beach..
That wont be changing any time soon..

Living in Florida being a Canes fan I hate to see this happen..but it is happening. FSU and espically UF really have been outdoing Miami the last few years

Miami is fertile ground. Even if Miami gets all the guys they want, there is still a handfull of guys who end up at other places around the country. But if its getting easier for other schools to come in and get Miami guys to go away, could be a tough few years for the U.

That's one hell of a small recruiting area to base a football program around, if you expect to be competetive on the national stage.

Allow me to look back upon Miami's better times. At the end of the 1985 season, Miami was ranked #2 in the nation. Testaverde was THE college QB. 'Canes fans were talking national championship.
Miami accepted an invitation to play in the Sugar Bowl. When their opponent was announced (Tennessee), there was much consternation. Miami deserved better. Defeating a higher ranked team was their ticket to the NC.
Tennessee hadn't made it to the Sugar Bowl for many years. Vols fans flocked to New Orleans. The Superdome was a sea of orange-clad hillbillies. They outnumbered Miami fans 3-to-1. Still, Miami fans were arrogantly confident that the 'Canes would roll over the Vols. They shouted this to anyone within earshot and bitterly complained that they'd been denied a proper adversary.
The game began with Miami marching down the field and scoring a rushing touchdown. The extra point was good. These seven points were the last the mighty 'Canes would score. Tennessee would sack Testaverde six times, intercept him six times, and rack up 35 unanswered points to win the Sugar Bowl in spectacular fashion. The Vols wound up ranked 4th. Miami... well, they were ranked below the Vols.
A footnote: Vols fans were so easily parted from their money that everyone in New Orleans, from the chamber of commerce to the hotel janitors wanted them back, and often.

Miami slurps now, and their glory days are overrated because they happened in the Big East, where an undefeated season meant wins over a crowd of impotent teams like Temple. Now that the 'Canes are in the ACC, which is populated with mediocre but not horrible (I mean horrible as in Big Least horrible) teams, Miami has to kiss its glamor days goodbye. They're not coming back. Ever.
BUT. . . with the lowest admission standards in the state of Florida, which puts them in the running for lowest nation-wide, Thug U will get by as they are now by recruiting the most talented players that couldn't get in anywhere else.

ISE, get your facts straight first, Miamis true glory days were in the 80s when they were an independent and playing Oklahoma, Notre Dame, FSU, and other highly ranked teams throughout the regular season. Almost a 3rd of their time in the Big East was also when they were under probation. Which also included a Virginia Tech that was a National contender.
BUT...they have no where near the lowest admission standards in Florida, and in fact have higher standards than UF and FSU..which still have higher standards than many other major colleges around the country.

As teams extend their reaches beyond local areas this naturally mean the erosion of local dominions.
So the question is Miami suffering more than it should? Is it losing talented athletes that it can't replace? The next seasons will tell.

Try again, Keyvon Webster, the recruit UM thougt they had in the bag. He chose USF over UM, and we got others from Dade/Broward. UM still owns the tri-county area, but it's not a lock. GO BULLS!
