Satan rejoins Penguins for playoffs

Miroslav Satan, who has 354 goals in his NHL career and is a veteran of more than 1,000 games, could have chucked the rest of the season, maybe gone home to Slovakia to wait there to see what happens when he becomes an unrestricted free agent in July. Teams gain a little salary-cap space toward the end of the season because of technicalities in the NHL rules, so the Penguins were able to recall Satan for this weekend. The cap doesn't apply during the playoffs, which start next week. Satan cleared re-entry waivers at noon, 37 days after his call never came in Florida. Although it's possible Satan will be a bystander in the playoffs, teams that make a long postseason run -- as the Penguins did last year when they reached the Stanley Cup final -- often dip into a large pool of players. Interim coach Dan Bylsma seems to have confidence that he can call on Satan.

Overall a smart move by the Pens. Injuries happen in the Playoffs and it's nice to have a little insurance.

Looking for people interested in representing some of the Western teams in a Playoff avatar challenge. Still looking for a Canes fan as well. Please check out my blog.

I don't think he would make a very good hockey player. How can he practice? All the ice rinks would melt in the underworld.

Yes, it is a smart move. However, we all know Pittsburgh will only go as far as the NHL wants them to go. It's no secret that Buttman wants Cindy to hoist the Cup for marketing and PR. Kinda the same thing a few years ago when the Steelers "beat" the Seahawks in the Super Bowl. Anyone who watched were well aware of the agenda the NFL had. Afterall, how many Seahawk jerseys could the NFL possibly sell?

April 11, 2009  12:04 PM ET

Well I hate Satan but he is a solid player and makes the Pens more dangerous.

The dumbest move was letting Malone go.

April 11, 2009  12:08 PM ET

The Pens didn't "let" Malone go. He left because the Pens didn't give him $7mil a year and Tampa did, and look how well that worked out for Tampa. Geno and Sid (along with AO) are going to be making some good players seem great and in turn making them stinking rich. Mario did it, Gretzky did it and now the new generation of stars is doing it.

I hate hearing this crap about Malone. He went where the money was, and who could blame him? His is family man with a young family. They overpaid for Malone though, that is now obvious. Pens offered Malone a contract that I heard around about a 1mil, or a little more, less than Tampa, and Malone didn't want it. SO be it, bye-bye. However, I am sick of hearing Malone cry about it everytime he gets interviewed. He is definitely having buyer's remorse. Oh, well.

As far as Satan goes, I am glad he got called back up. He wasn't worth the money Shero paid, but doesn't hurt to have him as "back-up" for playoffs.

It's funny that even the Pens fans don't deny they get all the calls. Last year when Drury's face got split open in the deciding game and there was no call it was pathetic. When Drury came back out after getting stitched up and got a 4 minute high sticking call even the Islander fans watching the game with me couldn't believe it.

Thank God the Flyers don't have Satan on their team. :)

That's just a bit of a stretch no?

Can you say sour grapes? Get over it. The Steelers are 6 time Super Bowl Champs whether you like it or not.

Malone's cap hit is 4.5 per year for 7 years. Tampa front loaded that contract. I agree with you to an extent about the rich part. These elite centers just make their wingers more expensive. (most of the time anyways). I believe this is Satans last year in the NHL. If he cant score with Crosby or Malkin feeding him the puck, what hope does he have? Satan = bye bye.

Agreed. Satan just doesn't have it anymore, however he's not a bad insurance policy for the Playoffs this year.

There's not need to defend anything because your lousy conspiracy claims are a result of your bitter jealousy. Why waste the energy defending such B.S.?

Some of us have been posting about a possible Pens-Flyers go around again this spring. Instead of the conference finals, the two teams get their playoff chops going early in a first round matchup.

I got my playoff face on already by destroying a small container of Philadelphia brand cream cheese from the fridge.

It's the Flyers. It's the playoffs. I love this sport. I love this country.

I think leting Malone go was wise. He wanted too much for what he really was. Don't get me wrong, I like his grit a lot, but not for more than 2.5 mil. Tampa got ripped off and if it's a bad move it's theirs...
