The Green Bay Packers have worked out Duke University basketball player Greg Paulus, according to a league source. Paulus is a former high school Gatorade Football Player of the Year selection who was offered football scholarships to Notre Dame and the University of Miami, but chose to play basketball at Duke. Paulus was a three-year starter for the Blue Devils at point guard who was once named second-team All-ACC. He was a third-team Academic All-American selection.

I'm sure this will work out great

April 14, 2009  10:20 AM ET

ha. first time I've ever posted first

April 14, 2009  10:22 AM ET

this be coll and all but - footballwise - can you please be kind enough to tell us WHAT POSITION DOES HE PLAYS!!!!!! Unless he is tryingout to be the water boy.

April 14, 2009  10:24 AM ET

He was one of the top high school quarterbacks for Christian Brothers Academy in Syracuse. He had the option to play QB in college and play basketball but Duke Basketball was his dream so he abandoned football in college.

I don't know if his skills are NFL ready but good luck to him.

you mean, he doesn't have a shot to be drafted to be point guard in the NBA? Damn...

April 14, 2009  10:26 AM ET

From watching him play ball, he seems pretty damn slow. Can't be a speed position. I don't think he is big enough to play any sort of linebacker position. My guess is that he was a quarterback?

April 14, 2009  10:27 AM ET

QB...I hear he's better than Brohm and Flynn combined!

April 14, 2009  10:37 AM ET

T-Bag Paulus! clap, clap, clap clap clap

April 14, 2009  10:38 AM ET

This is very interesting as I didn't know of his football background (was before I ever took notice of recruiting). But, as one can see that Duke doesn't have a great rep for putting players in the NBA that can succeed or coach the game (cough cough Tommy Amaker), I have to hope Paulus can succeed in the NFL. Would make for a great story!

April 14, 2009  10:38 AM ET

does he own a motorcycle? have any kids out of wedlock? any tatoo's? , a conviction for stealing another students computer, stero etc?

He might not be eligable to enter the fraternity of NFL receivers of the football

April 14, 2009  10:39 AM ET

Supposedly, former Duke football coach Ted Roof really wanted Paulus to walk on to the football team as a QB. I'd say Coach K nixed that given the sorry condition of Dook football under Roof. It will be difficult for him to make the adjustment. It is hard enough to adjust from college to the pros, but he's really going to be jumping from high school to the pros with a 4 year layoff in between. Good luck to him.

I guess the Green Bay Packers have found their kicker for the future...maybe they can bring back Brett "CRYBABY" Farve" to be the holder ?

April 14, 2009  10:47 AM ET

i believe he had a scholarship offer from Notre Dame to play QB along with the offer to play basketball at Duke coming out of highschool. the kid took a beating at Duke playing basketball so don't know how his body could hold up if by some slim chance he makes an NFL team.

April 14, 2009  10:48 AM ET

and if i read the story before i posted you would have already known about the Notre Dame scholarship offer. not comprehending things well this morning.

April 14, 2009  10:52 AM ET

It was just a workout, he's not a Packer or any other NFL mascot. This article should be secluded to ESPN since it's news that really has no meaning, which is 90% of their programming. Why not work him out? Why not attempt to get paid to practice in the NFL at a great organization than go to Europe or NBA D Leauge?

April 14, 2009  10:58 AM ET

So answer me this.... Is Greg Paulus related to Ron Paulus? If so, the Packers are SCREWED. hehe. Ron Paulus SUCKED in the pros.

OLB thats pretty obvious

April 14, 2009  11:04 AM ET

With Duke's amazing track record of sending players to the pros, this should work out just fine for the Pack...damn, I couldnt get that out with a straight face.

He will be yet another in a LONG line of failed Duke alumni in the pros...he will be unique because he will fail in 2 sports.

April 14, 2009  11:05 AM ET

His high school ran a wide-open offense and his numbers were padded as a result of throwing 40+ times a game. He was severely outclassed at the Army High School All-American Game. His brother played QB at the same school, put up gaudy numbers, and couldn't sniff the field at North Carolina. Either Paulus won't get in the League w/o a search warrant.

It's not Ron Paulus....it's Ron Powlus. So, no. They are not related.
