According to various baseball sources, it was Bud Selig who kiboshed that trade of Jacque Jones from the Cubs to the Marlins last week - and not a matter of the Cubs simply having second thoughts. Seems Selig deemed the money the Cubs were to absorb on Jones' contract as excessive.

It should be clerly apparent by now that the Daily News will report anything, irrespective of the truth or the slightest glimmer of credibility.

They have become the Daily National Enquirer.

Selig is only interested in two things: beer, and erectile dysfunction.

why is that any f'n business of his what the cubs are willing to absorb to get rid of a guy they don't need anymore and also in the interest of sending him somewhere to play every day....it is a win-win for the cubs and the Jones, but Selig sticks his loser nose into it??? How many times have the yankees swallowed big money to dump someone, where was the interference then? Could this have something to do with the Brewers being in 1st now....interesting,,,,,,

Selig is making a big mistake here. He is getting personally involved in commerce between two teams that would otherwise be permitted under the rules. There needs to be an appeal to an independent arbitrator so he can explain himself.

Aren't the Brewers (Selig's team) in the same division as the Cubs?
Yup, leading them by about 7.5 games. I wonder??????? LOL!

July 1, 2007  12:45 PM ET

dude he's helping the cubs out here, he doesn't want them straddled with Jones' contract. It's not like they were trading for an X-factor player anyway

July 1, 2007  12:51 PM ET

Nevertheless if the Cubs feel they're a better team w/o Jones, they probably are. That's usually been decided when someone is willing to pay you to leave.

July 1, 2007  02:11 PM ET

I'm sure that he is just gonna strike down every trade until the Brewers come up.

July 1, 2007  03:20 PM ET

Dunedan Eressea, he is NOT helping the Cubs. JACQUE JONES IS THE WORST OUTFIELDER ON EARTH. PLEASE TRADE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

July 1, 2007  05:56 PM ET

Man, I'm Jonesin' right now.

July 1, 2007  07:45 PM ET

He is not the worst OF on earth..c'mon....he has a bad throwing arm, but he covers ground well and makes most of the plays you would want, this year he is not hitting and that has been the problem....

July 1, 2007  08:59 PM ET

I`d agree to any type of trade that sheds this underachiever, trade him for a can of pinto beans, eat the contract...obviously,Jones aint worth much without steroidal input...from 38 homers last season to...gulp! all of 2 this year.

July 1, 2007  11:14 PM ET

charlescurtis I would have to agree with you.

July 1, 2007  11:54 PM ET

Clemens salary is not deemed excessive? He vetoed it cause he knows it will help the Cubs, not the Brewers.

July 2, 2007  02:41 AM ET

excessive money???? where was selig when yankees overpay players???? I guess if the cubs can't have selig in their pockets...!!! I understand.... they don't have the deep pockets of the yankees... they can't overpay JJ and selig at the same time!!!!

July 2, 2007  02:56 AM ET

Selig has showed he is nothing but a "self-serving" and corrupt commissioner!

July 2, 2007  03:36 AM ET

Name one thing that Selig has done right.
Ok then. Case closed. Baseball will continue to suck until this weird old **** dies or moves on.

July 2, 2007  03:58 AM ET

Wait, how much were the Cubs going to absorb? because I do vaguely recall that the Giants are paying approximately 97% of Armando Benitez's contract (about 9.1 million of Benitez's 9.4 million, to let him play for the Marlins)

Not-my-Bud Selig is interested in the Brewers winning, period. That guy has a conflict of interest. Isn't it true that his daughter effectively runs the Brewers? Maybe she's whined in his ear, maybe not. He better have not been involved.

mega cubs fan, the seligs have been out of the brewers organization altogether for about the past 3 years and under brand new ownership....and simply getting rid of jacque jones isn't going to make the brewers play any worse....you forget that they are still winning.....big consiparacy theory here.....
