Paulus facing NCAA obstacles

If Greg Paulus can find a way to extend his playing days as a college athlete in a sport other than basketball, the NCAA has no business blocking his path. Having exhausted his basketball eligibility at Duke, the former high school quarterback star is now shopping for a football uniform. He's had talks with Michigan and obviously wants to meet with other schools. But landing safely on his feet in either a Division I Bowl (formerly Division I-A) or Championship (formerly Division I-AA) football program likely will be the least of Paulus' problems. In order to play in the '09 season for any school above the Division II competitive category, he'll need to receive a special NCAA waiver. Historically, the governing organization grants such approvals only to players with medical hardships or unusual emergencies. That's one problem. Another is an NCAA requirement that Paulus would have to pursue a graduate school degree not offered at Duke, which could be more difficult to find than a way to stop Ty Lawson in transition.

Knowing how inept the NCAA is and how it runs from it's own shadow unless it's shadow has $$$ to give it for TV rights, I would think Paulus will get a waiver to play.

And here's a little antidote to all you ridiculous UM/Rich Rod haters. This comes from Larry Foote, 2 time SUPER BOWL CHAMPION from the Steelers. His quotes:

"It's unbelievable. As soon as his (richrod) staff got in here, they opened the doors to everybody. It's not just guys that are in the pros, but past players that didn't make the pros. He embraces you with love.

"He opened the doors up and the trainers are working out with some of those guys and they're not charging us. We try to pay them and they still say no. Mike Barwis and his staff, they train us during their lunch breaks. There aren't that many people that are going to give up their lunch break to keep working, so those guys are unbelievable.

"They opened the doors up for the past players and you get that sense that they want you back."

I can't guarantee that Rich will bring Michigan back to it's past winning ways (though he's on the track of doing so) but I can tell you that he has turned a very stale and sheltered program into a thriving and open one. RichRod has embraced ALL of Michigan's past players to partake in the program. And believe me, they love it.

I refuse to comment about Paulus anymore after this comment. Even when I am being polite about the guy I get criticized.

I'm done discussing him after I click submit.

J. Hova - your posts are consistently positive and diplomatic. Anyone taking issue must have a stick up their arse.

Thank you, I try to stay clear on some things but if you say one word out of place some people think I'm taking a shot or being mean.

Agreed.

Mine, on the otherhand have been slanted and tainted with apocolyptic scenarios. I have a lot to learn for J. Hova.

Has Richrod embraced Larry Harrison Jr to come back - he is after all a former Michigan player. Just because he got busted jacking off on someone's porch doesn't change that....

Court Jesters were an integral part of every King's court. The Kings employed them to "keep it real" using sarcasm and humor because everyone else was focused on kissing the King's arse. GatorBaitor you're the best court jester on these boards - please don't change too much!

Post of the day!!!!!

The NCAA would allow him to play football even after he had an official workout with Green Bay?

"Another[problem] is an NCAA requirement that Paulus would have to pursue a graduate school degree not offered at Duke"

This is already starting to sound like too much of a hassle for one season...Also, knowing our advisors, they would probably do this in a shady way and it would look bad. let's just focus on our freshmen and developing them...I like it when UM is out of the headlines.

He's on track of bringing them back, eh?

That's why he's out pursuing QBs that haven't played football for 4 years and have only 1 year of eligibility remaining?
