Curry to try Motown diet

07:10 AM ET 04.17 | Eddy Curry is headed to Detroit next month, but not to the Pistons. The Knicks center is going to Motown to lose weight and work out with a personal trainer/nutritionist, according to Donnie Walsh. Curry's agent, Leon Rose, came up with the idea for Curry, who played in just three games. The theory is Curry's weight is directly related to his knee troubles. Mike D'Antoni, in his exit meeting with Curry yesterday, told the overweight but talented center how important he still was to the franchise and pleaded with him to come back to training camp in shape. Whether he plays in the summer league in Las Vegas is up to Curry. D'Antoni said he believes Curry is serious this time, but added, "I'm not going to bet my mortgage on it."

How many years has he been in the league? How old is he? Is there any hope that a bulb went on in his brain.

April 17, 2009  07:25 AM ET

Who saw D-Wade drop 50 on the Knicks in 3 quarters, Lebron get a near triple double and Kobe get 60...pretty much sums up that team. Every year it's just the same cycle of losing.

If they can i hope they get the number one pick just to put them out of their misery.

Curry has some skills, that will no doubt be enhanced if he could lose 40+lbs. He will be more spry for rebounds and defense, which has always been the knock on him. The guy can score with the best of 'em for a center .

April 17, 2009  07:36 AM ET

Lets hope it was just the weight, and not a lack of desire or hear, that was the problem.

April 17, 2009  07:44 AM ET

Is he going to watch tapes of 2008 Lions games? That would make me want to throw up - and I would probably lose weight.

yeah it's Fact but it's so easy to knock him for his rebounding efforts...in his best season he average like 8.1 free throw attempts per game, if it were this current season he would be top 10 in the nba for free throw attempts.

If he gives himself a fair chance and his organisation gives him a fair chance/ie support and not little snipes like "i wouldn't bet my house on it"...he may be in the running for most improved player next year....but yeah he'd need to work like crazy to do that.

April 17, 2009  08:34 AM ET

Thats stupid. I hope this is some sort of April fools joke. Donnie and his agent need to work out some form of buyout that involves him opting out of his contract...c'mon how many seasons has he come in overweight?...

They should terminate his contract on grounds that he has failed to put himself in a position to render the services on the contract he signed... or medical retirement due to weight-induced chronic knee pain...

whathefork... this guy has never been in shape and he got paid 11mil last season for playing 12minutes... and now he gets to fly to Motown to chill with a new Chef?

April 17, 2009  08:34 AM ET

s/b lack or desire or heart.

April 17, 2009  08:36 AM ET

2nd correction: lack of desire or heart. I started too early today.

no coment needed

April 17, 2009  08:48 AM ET

Detroit? Hey, we can fix the economy ... just have Eddy eat nothing but the cars that GM can't sell ...

April 17, 2009  08:50 AM ET

Why do you need to tell a PROFESSIONAL to get in shape every year? Good thing D'Antoni didn't bet his mortgage on it! He'll be fat again next season. When he comes to Detroit, I can see him now in the nightclubs with Derrick Coleman.

This is a dump story, but here are some points on the Knicks!

I don???t want to hear opinion I want fact or common since!

Isiah inherited a team where the average age was 32! The only ???quote??? star Houston was hurt never to play real basketball again! Kurt Thomas was likely the best player! The only young talent was Sweeney! Remember Andreson, Mcdyess was hurt, Eisley and weatherspoon, these 4 guys = 30M!

Isiah wanted ownership in Toronto, drafted well but lift! Isiah record was 41, 42 and 48 over 3 years in Indiana. Isiah was believed to have bankrupt the CBA! However, the NBA started the NBA developmental league! How many star college woman players are going to the EU to play basketball now that there is a WNBA!

Isiah traded for a 26 year old Marbury and a first, Malik and a first, Taylor and a first, Q and a first! Isiah had no first round pick his first year! The salary cap was around 130M!

Walsh was with Indiana for 20 years. He won no Championships! He is not known to have a good eye for talent! In leaving, the team is almost bankrupt and borrowing money from the NBA!

Walsh started at the Knicks with an average age of 25, and the cap was roughly 95M! Talent wise Walsh had Marbury and Zach! No one questions their talent, only there brain! Young Talent Lee, Nate, Chandler, Balkman and Collens! OH! Side note how is Ariza doing?

Walsh traded Zach, Crawford, Cut Marbury and move 2010 friendly contract! The Knicks received no FIRST! Walsh first pick has a bad back and looks like a bust!

With Isiah???s team and a new system, the Knicks were 6 and 3! After making the trades this year, the Knicks had a bigger tanking then under Isiah!

No one is trading for Curry, so we can not afford LBJ if he wanted to come!

Curry, Jefferies, Nate, Lee, Danilo, Chandler and this years first will = 45M at the end of next year! THE KNICKS WILL HAVE 11M TO SIGN A STAR AND 5 ROLL PLAYERS.

Walsh just got back from scouting players in the EU that can shoot but likely no defense!

Can someone tell me why I should be positive? Don???t give my opinions, give me numbers and FACT!

April 17, 2009  09:20 AM ET

"The theory is Curry's weight is directly related to his knee troubles."

Duh...did the Knicks need a nutritionist to tell them this?? Losing 50 pounds (he's well over 300)takes committment, determination, discipline, and focus. Curry lacks all the above. After about a week, he'll be found at McDonalds.

All your points are baseless... see the salary cap below. Even with Curry and Jefferies on the roster in 2011 we're at 24mil so even if the cap stays at 65mil... we have 41 mil to spend on free agents... the max they will get is 20mil so we can sure sign two... we also have decent players that we can sign because they are on our team.. and heck have you seen Danillo's help defense?... and his offensive game? Don't forget he isn't 100% yet ... and he was a lottery pick.. lottery.. it means no guarantees.. but given his skill and age and the fact that we weren't going to be championship in two or three years... he's damn worth the sixth pick...

http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?story_id=9155

Walsh has done a great jon so far... I'd give him and Dan a B+. My only problem was him not trading Nate and Jefferies... but then we all thought we're going to make the playoffs... his grade will drop to a B if he gets nothing back for Lee... and he'll go all the way to A+ if he's able to move Curry and Jefferies before the end of 2010 season.

Like you said there was no hope for this franchise before he got here.. now there's a plan... there's hope... appreciate that!

April 17, 2009  09:34 AM ET

I can't believe you guys are believing this. First off, Curry is not going to lose weight because there is no incentive for him to do so. He's not working for a contract or anything, and he doesn't care about playing, or else he'd play with more heart on the floor. Secondly, even if he does lose weight, he's not going to play with anymore energy. When you don't jump for rebounds or even make a pretense of playing defense, it doesn't matter if you are 320 or 270.

D'Antoni's quote at the end of the article summed it up. Don't bet your mortgage on it.

Bingo. Absolutely correct. There's no way he's going to lose that much weight.

April 17, 2009  09:41 AM ET

I've got just one thing to say; I TOLD YOU SO. History is by far the best reference for research. Walsh was with the Pacers for 24 years. Did someone give him "smart pills" before he came to New York.

Lostwill what are we going to do with you!!!

That salary listing does not account for LEE or NATE getting signed this summer! Are you going to let them both walk for nothing? That will conservatively be about 15M. It does not account for the 3M for this years draft pick!

Finally 65M Lostwill """The cap is 56M"""" where are you getting 65!
