Isles out of running for Gilroy

The prospect of North Bellmore native Matt Gilroy, the Hobey Baker Award-winning defenseman from Boston University, coming home to sign an NHL contract with the Islanders turned out to be little more than a romantic notion. All indications are that the Islanders are out of the running for Gilroy, who likely is headed for a larger hockey market. Most speculation has centered on Toronto, Vancouver and Philadelphia as Gilroy's most likely destinations, though several other teams have expressed interest.

Oh well, that would have been a nice compliment to Tavares.

According to sources on LI for weeks the Islanders were never in the running because the kid did not want to play at home. Not news...

April 17, 2009  09:48 AM ET

That could be a good piece for Toronto. One of these days we might be able to keep a LI kid on LI. He even went to BU so this should have been a slam dunk for Garth and the Pro-Boston everything Isles. However, the Leafs could use him just as much as the Isles, if not more.

Whoop dee doo!

Tavares has to say all the right things but you know he doesn't want to play for the Islanders either. Its a gongshow operation run by a carzy owner and a terrible GM.

***Yawn*** Where did you read and repeat that quote from Bauer? For the issues that the Isles are going through they are doing a pretty good job of straighening out their dilema. After Smyth decided to leave the Isles, Snow figured out that it was time to use the development system the way it is intended, by acquiring talent in the draft. Did you not see how quickly the Pens have raised themselves after having a first round pick and decent drafting? I'm not saying that the Isles are picking up Crosby or Malkin but they are acquiring talent and finally utilizing the farm system that they have neglected. With that being said you were just trying to stir the pot and this time it worked.

By the way, when was the last time your GM traded a 7th round draft pick with chronic injuries for a 1st round pick in a deep draft?

He better not trade this pick. I hear the Leafs will trade everything except their arena.

Well what about the 800lb gorilla in the form of Wang's threats of moving to Kansas City?!?

I think the formula for staying in NY is pretty simple. Start winning games, get an arena, and you stay. But they won't get an arena until they prove that they are committed to winning.

NYI fans need not worry. The JT story is being blown way out of proportion. The only way NYI won't get Tavares is if they don't want him. Burke basically only said he's going to do his due diligence and try and find out who each team wants, then work accordingly.

I would not be surprised to see Matt Gilroy sign with the Toronto Maple Leafs here. Brian Burke is providing quite the opportunity to young players. He will also be able to move up in the draft to get an NHL ready pick (Tavares, Hedman, Caron, Cowen).

For the umteenth time fellas, the Islanders lease is through 2015 and Wangs goal is to build a new arena there. KC will have a team well before that.

The only way the Isles are going to move is complete failure to approve Wang's Lighthouse project. He has set a timeline for this by the start of next season but the contract runs until 2015 so make that what you will. I don't think they are moving anywhere. Nassau County doesn't have the smartest people in office but I really don't believe that they can be that stupid as to let this project fail.

This Gilroy thing has been blown way out of proportion.

Remember, he is 25, not 22. he would probably be a depth defenseman next year (4 or 5??) at best. If the Leafs land him, fine, he will help as a depth player. However, he isn't going to supplant Schenn, Finger, White or Kaberle/Kubina (whoever doesn't get traded), so even on the Leafs mediocre back-end, he is a #5 at best.

He is not the second-coming of Orr.

April 17, 2009  02:30 PM ET

$3 mil for a 25 y.o. rookie who's been playing against younger competition the last few years and who may be no better than a third pairing defenseman in the NHL?? The Leafs can have him.

it's basically the same tactic that Mario Lemieux did with the Penguins when they were trying to negotiate for a new arena.

Wang is a business man first, hockey man second. He won't make a deal just to make a deal. Gilroy is supposedly asking for up to 3 million a year. He's 25 with not much upside left and played in a league with boys 3 to 7 years younger than himself. He hasn't proven himself yet other than that he can play in college where nearly most never crack into the NHL and those that do leave after their sophomore year.

The Rangers signed him

2 years 3.5 million on a one way deal.
