Recruit: Georgia waited too long
A little more love might have kept Gainesville High School star Tai-ler Jones a little closer to home as he played his college ball. The speedy receiver, who ranks as one of the state's top junior prospects, ended the speculation about his future by choosing Stanford as his college choice during a Thursday afternoon press conference at the school in front of excited friends, family and coaches. Jones, who boasts a 3.6 GPA and a robust 25 ACT score, chose the Cardinal from among his six finalists, including Georgia, Cal, UCLA, Notre Dame and North Carolina. He totaled 32 scholarship offers overall, including Georgia Tech. The lifelong UGA fan he said he likely would have chosen the Bulldogs had they made a scholarship offer a little sooner. The Dogs became the 31st school to offer the 6-foot-1, 178-pounder when they did so in late March.

OK, I know slightly less than nothing about Stanford. What situation is Jones headed into? Who is the QB? For how long? Is there an heir apparent? What about other receivers? O-line? RBs? Basically, can someone give me the Cliff Notes on Stanford's "O" for the next few seasons? Thanks!

25 on your ACT is robust?

They have upgraded pretty much everywhere over the last 2 recruiting seasons JR. Harbaugh has them buzzing for sure. They brought in an absolute STUD RB this year. If I was a receiver, Stanford would definitely be on my radar. Defenses will have to gameplan for the RB, thereby opening passing lanes. Would not surprise me to see Stanford making a consistent run on our heels for the next few years.

QB Andrew Luck from Houston has had a great spring at Stanford. Watch the name. #4 ranked QB coming out of HS.

Okay, so it means he'll score higher on the Wonderlic than VY and Jeff George. Then again, everyone from Stanford would.

A high school junior holds a press conference? Is he related to T.O.?

Hey, I'm faculty at UGA and if you can go to Stanford for free you're crazy not to. UGA is a good school, but Stanford is a lot more prestigious. And you can certainly get to the NFL from Stanford.
25 on the ACT is maybe good for a football player? It's roughly equivalent to an 1100 range score on the SAT. That'll probably put him in the bottom 25 percentile of the Stanford freshman class. It's even below average at UGA. But it's not bad.

Oh, when I say below average at UGA I just mean that the average incoming freshman score on the SAT here is over 1200.

Mitch Mustain was like the 2nd ranked QB coming out of HS. Now he's the 3rd ranked QB at USC. Good HS performance is better than bad HS performance, doesn't guarantee good Div I success. Luck was really good in a pretty good HS system, and if he had a good spring, that's a positive sign.

That's rarefied air for college football recruits. I'd be a little surprised if anyone on your team or mine had an ACT that high. There might be one or two, though.

For the ACT a perfect score is 36; however robsut at my high school was considered in the low to 30s and up.

Anyone want to bet he doesn't go to Stanford? I'd give it a 1 in 25 (notice the ACT tie in here)chance.

At West Virginia or Texas A&M, it's stratospheric. Anywhere else, it's mediocre (that's an SAT word meaning piddlin').

Thank you Henry. That puts the 3.6 into perspective doesn't it.

I went to school with a kid at my Barberton High School who got a 6. I think a random guess would give you 8.
But since it was Bo Schembechler's alma maater, Bo picked him up for o line.
Kid washed out; just could grasp the schemes.

3.6 is robust on the HS's 10.0 scale.
