Messier in running for Oilers job?

There's never been an opening in New York for Mark Messier to fill, never a job for him to step into, but there sure is one in Edmonton, where the Oilers are seeking a head coach, isn't there? Messier was burned a couple of years ago when his father, Doug, went public with the assertion that Mark would be the logical choice to succeed GM Glen Sather, even though Don Maloney was in place as the Rangers' assistant GM. No. 11 has since kept a respectful silence even while telling The Post this winter that he's ready, willing and able to join the Rangers organization in essentially any role he might be assigned. For the first time, he said that he thought he could coach in the NHL, though he was not lobbying for Tom Renney's job. Now there's Edmonton, where he is revered. Now there's Edmonton, where his bud Kevin Lowe likely will have much influence in hiring Craig MacTavish's successor even if Steve Tambellini is the GM conducting the job search. Now there's Edmonton, where his candidacy surely would receive public support.

These are all good points. Hey wait a minute, are you sure this is from the New York Post?

Might have been a typo. :)

I think Messier should be a head coach in junior first or assistant.

Agreed.

Nothing wrong with hiring him as an assistant though and let him learn from an experienced head coach...

Um, didn't Renney get fired 2 months ago and they hired Torts?

It would be kinda cool to see both Messier and Patrick Roy as NHL coaches next year, probably will happen.

Can anyone say, Brett Hull???

Whoever wrote this post needs to get out of Toronto and get the facts straight. The biggest complaint in Oil town has been it is an old boys club. We are tired of ex Oilers and want a top coach, not some has been NHL player.

Messier is not assistant material. I like this rumor, I have to say that i wouldn`t mind seeing it happening. I like it better than the **** quinn, cose I`d like to see the oil win some games.

Count me among those who thinks he needs experience as a head coach in junior or an assistant somewhere in the pros before he takes over in Edmonton. Easy call.

Just because you were a great player, doesn't make you a good coach. Ask Wayne how the gig's going down in Phoenix.

Yep, maybe he could start off driving the Zamboni and work his way up like everyone. I hear there is an opening in Vancouver, so he could pay back the millions he duped us out of for doing nothing!

Mark Messier = Great Zamboni Driver!

This article contains some valid, points, a rarity in New York Post Hockey articles. However, there is proof it is in fact written by the post, and not a copy of another professionally written article... This is written like a grade 8 introdcution to a public speaking asignment.

First off, Mark Messier has a massive ego. It kept him in the league 3 years past his expiry date. Second off, this man has proven nothing as far as coaching or managing is concerned. Third, he was never a leader by voice, he was a leader by action. What is he going to do? Lace them up again and become a player/captain/coach? Not bloody likely. This man should not be allowed to coach in the NHL, not without paying his dues, and getting the proper experience first. As far as him being a GM, he couldn't be any worse than Sather, Murray, or many other laughables currently in control of multi-million dollar operations. Maybe that's where he should start?
