Gainey on Habs' hot seat

It seemed like an innocent question at the time. Obviously Bob Gainey did not perceive it that way. Just 15 hours after his Montreal Canadiens had suffered a 5-1 embarrassment at the hands of the arch-rival Boston Bruins, Gainey had just been asked about his post-game comment in which he said his players had to "listen to their coach" in order to get back into this series. Instead of answering the query, which was posed without any maliciousness by a respected francophone reporter during a news conference yesterday afternoon, Gainey snapped at him. According to the local media, as minor as this incident was, it was the third time in the past several weeks Gainey had lost his composure with the media. This is the same Gainey who during his playing days was known for keeping his cool. The same Gainey who always has held his emotions close to the vest. And now, there seem to be cracks developing in his armour, just like there are in his team. Sure sounds like a man who is letting the pressure of sitting on the Canadiens' hot seat start to get to him. Gainey should feel that way. The natives here are getting restless. Many already are. There is chatter around Montreal that Gainey's days running the Habs could be over if the team does not advance deep into the post-season. Some suggest he'll be fired, although such a decision certainly is contingent on the potential new owners. Others figure he'll just resign and walk away into the Montreal sunset before anyone can boot him out.

Regardless of how it's done, I think it's time for Gainey to go. This would be blasphemous about five years ago, but he has built a team of gutless prima donnas who don't listen to their coaches (Carbo is laughing somewhere), and refuse to get dirty. They're great for the regular season (although that's not the case this year), but when the playoffs come, it get a lot muckier, and this team deosn't have what it takes. I think the same can be said for the San Jose Sharks.

I don't think Carey Price is helping The Canadiens cause either. His play just oozes lazy. He has been terribly shaky, and it's been that way all season long. I can't fathom why Gainey has not started Jaroslav Halak? Halak has proven to be more compitent this year.

Anyhow, it looks as though this team wants the season to be finished with, and begin a purging of sorts. Get rid of some bad apples in the bunch, possibly even grown a new tree?

April 20, 2009  08:50 AM ET

How could it not be obvious that he's the root of all the problems?

April 20, 2009  09:23 AM ET

He should be fired. He's made bad decision after bad decision. Traded Huet mid-season. Wanted Kovalev traded. Fired former coach and put himself behind the bench. I was actually rooting for Buffalo or Florida to make it to the eighth spot and push Montreal out, cause even with Markov, this team isn't good, average at best. Only guys I consider stars are Kovalev and Markov. Price is too young, needed more back-up training, the kostisyns (sp) are a bad version of the sedins, Schneider is old, tangauy passes first and shoots never, what happen to saku? This is just an average team that surprised some last year, and started to unravel when Huet was traded. Almost got beat out first round by 8th seed Boston, beat out by 6th seed Flyers, and haven't recovered since then.

I don't think Carey Price is lazy. I just think throwing the weight of the world on him at such a young age has put him into a funk where he has zero confidence. Some guys fight through it and some guys blow up. He looks like he doesn't have a clue right now and he seems to be playing scared. Gainey needs to put Halak in and leave him in as long as they stay in the playoffs and then after the season go out and find a veteran goalie to team with Price and mentor him. The rest of the roster needs a complete makeover as you are right on about the rotten apples

This week in "No **** Magazine"
where do you start with where this guy messed up?

April 20, 2009  09:34 AM ET

I'll keep it simple: Bob Gainey is not an adequate coach for the Montreal Canadiens. It's a shame to see a legend like him strain his reputation like this.

April 20, 2009  09:36 AM ET

Would Montreal fire him with the talks of a sale going on? That would leave the new owners with no coach and no GM. I could see him walking away though...

At least they made the Playoffs which is more than can be said for some teams. That being said, firing Guy just meant that Gainey inherited the same problems he had with this team. Furthermore, Price was not and does not appear to be ready yet.

Why would you fire him if you are selling the team. Also when Gainey got to Montreal they were terrible now he has rebuilt them and they are still young. The only problem is they are too European, small, and soft, he just needs to add some tough, big, Canadians in the draft or through free agents.

what exactly, does too European mean?
Lindstrom
Ovechkin
Malkin
Khabibulin
Chara
Gonchar (for my Pitts. friends)
Lucic
not too shabby for starters, right? I think some people need to move behind the jingoism

Seriously, that European argument is worthless these days.

Thanks for adding the Gonch. :)

I don't know bjz3. Carey Price seemed to be working pretty damn hard during the last regular season game against Pittsburgh, which I know was a loss, but his lateral movement was quick, his arms and legs were moving with purpose. The past 2 games he has not been moving across the crease well at all, usually not even making it all the way across, and having to give an extra push half way through, resulting in an open net chance for the opposition. His attempts at making saves with his trapper are very lazy, and his legs don't have the zip that they normally would when he puts in an effort.

You can't tell me that the game against Pittsburgh wasn't high pressure, as Montreal had a lot riding on it. If he could put in the effort in that situation, he can put in the effort in the playoffs.

Also, the you'll note, the 3rd Boston goal killed the Canadiens. They were in the game until then. They battled, but when that 3rd goal, which was a horrible effort by Price, went in, you could see that team just completely deflate.

Carey Price has potential... I really think he does. I just don't think the weight of the world is on his shoulders like everyone seems to say. He's won World Junior Championships, he's been on a Calder Cup championship team... he knows pressure.

Also, what is Gainey doing? Get George Laraque the hell out of the line-up, he is not helping your cause, he is not sending a "message"... why is he there?

in this olde goaltender's opinon, Price is a good...backup. I could see him stepping in wyhen your main guy goes down. I don't he could do what Clemm did for the Devils when LOTF went down, but I suppose he could hold the fort for a little while. Price was just one of Gainey's mistakes, albeit a big one. The sports world is littered with guys that were huge until they got to play with the big boys.
And I'm with you, I don't understand Laraque playing so much either.

So Spiny, Your boys took 2 in Washington and held Ovie without a goal. Think Seabird is getting a little nervous?

I don't know about Seabird, but The Caps were really pressing on saturday. They keep that up and they'll be in even more trouble.
Me, I take nothing for granted. I can only hope that I will enjoy my beer and chips tonight (featuring the BEST..yes BEST homade salsa around)
