Senators in market for forward, defenseman

Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray has spoken often about his desire to acquire another top-six forward this summer. What he needs just as desperately -- at least until Erik Karlsson is ready to play full time in the NHL, which won't likely be for another year -- is a No. 1 offensive defenseman, someone like Wade Redden in his prime. After goaltending, it was the biggest hole in the team last season. There wasn't anyone to start the offense. As a result, it went nowhere. To wit, it struggled to score goals all season. If Murray doesn't get such a defenceman, he'll be crossing his fingers all year that Alexandre Picard, Chris Campoli or Brendan Bell, if he's re-signed, can do the job. There wouldn't be a lot of comfort in that. The problem, though, is that the field of free-agent defensemen is slim this year. At the top of the list is Florida's Jay Bouwmeester, followed by Montreal's Mike Komisarek and Vancouver's Mattias Ohlund. Anaheim's Scott Niedermayer is a free agent, but he's not going anywhere. His brother and teammate Rob is also a free agent. They'll re-sign with the Ducks to stay together or -- who knows? -- retire?

The Senators need a top six forward before they sign another defenseman. Given the chance, I believe Kuba can fill that role. He has proven to be a smart puck handler, and a solid passer, he has just been passed over for the offensive role, due in part to the odd belief Picard or Bell could do the job better? Chris Campoli is another defenseman who can move the puck, however, his consistency is in question. I would prefer to see a big power-forward added to the top six. I'm secretly hoping Ottawa drafts Zack Kassian from Peterborough this year, and puts him on a line with Mike Fisher and Nick Foligno. As for signing a free-agent puck moving defenseman, good luck.

Now that you saw Comrie & Campoli play 30 games, curious what your take on the trade is now? If SJ loses to Anaheim the pick will be #26.

they are? Really?
gee, and every other team in the league isn't?
What a stupid article

Agreed 100%. No one is going to say they're in the market for a 4th liner and a pylon on the defensive side.

Really? I would... Isn't Detroit doing that? They already have all the other pieces.

I still like the trade... but more for both sides now. Mike Comrie cooled right off after the first 8 or so games in a Senators uniform, and he became quite the non-factor in meaningful games. I find it odd, as he was quite the opposite before he left Ottawa for New York 2 years ago. I find Comrie and McAmmond did the exact same thing, lit it up when they first got there, then slid off back to obscurity.

Chris Campoli I am impressed with, more than I thought I would be. Campoli has turned out to be a solid puck mover, when he is on his game. He also has a good shot, and good vision. He needs to work on his defensive zone coverage, but that can be taught. His major downfall is he tends to have lapses where he seems to forget the system, and his overall consistency seems to still be suspect. That being said, he is still very young, and probably will turn out to be a solid 3-4 d-man.

The Islanders getting that #26-30 pick could be huge though. It gives them quite the bargaining chip in the draft. They could easily package something together to move up in the first round, and be able to select 2 guys ready for the NHL out of the box. I'm sure they can get at least a top 10 pick this year to go along with Number 1.

I said this in an earlier post... the New York Islanders will make the playoffs in 2 years, and be a playoff force in 5.

Is that why they went out and signed Hossa last year, cause they needed a 4th liner?

I wouldn't go that far but they are certainly headed in the right direction.

You saw the Comrie that we saw the 2nd half of last season and this entire season. A floater with more hype than substance.

If someone needs a pylon, the Caps should be willing to part with Jeff Schultz. That dude blows. I dont know what Gabby and McPhee see in that joker.

They can have Redden, although he's been surprisingly adequate thus far, so I won't knock him.
And not that I'm his biggest fan, but will people (NYR fans especially) get off rosival's back now?

ya so stupid..who wouldn't want a redden in his prime? except maybe teh rangers, that rather have him in the midst of a complete career shutdown...

go figure, the ottawa ****-izen wrote it...teh sens can do all they want, they will still suck next year...or at least, I'm hoping...

That was sarcasm based upon the fact that Detroit has as olid team, and all they need to round it out is a 4th liner and maybe a pylon on the back-end to give them something to finally gripe about.

I don't think Ottawa will suck next year. They are finally playing a system they like, and they have adressed their biggest concern in net... let's hope it pans out. I think if they draft properly, and get Zack Kassian, who is big enough, strong enough, and fast enough to play in the NHL... I think they can throw out 2 very solid offensive units, 1 two-way/checking unit and 1 defensive unit. All they really need is for Filip Kuba to step up, and play the offensive role that he has the ability to. Campoli can move the puck to, and having from the start of a season will probably help his situation. I'm willing to lay money down Ottawa finishes 5th or better next year in the Eastern Conference.

You have to believe. Your Islanders are only going to get better, and with this years draft, better will come sooner rather than later.

As for Comrie, he is definately lacking in the passion department now. Maybe he should go run "The Brick" furniture store in Edmonton or something?

Yeah... ok, under Cory Clouston Ottawa was the 2nd winningest team in the league.

This just in... You need to watch more than just Pittsburgh Penguins (who were the only team hotter than Ottawa since Cory Clouston started coaching) games.

MO, to be fair, I agree with some of your previous comments: Kuba does have the potential and Campoli, maybe....but I'm still not sold on their net, as Leclaire is injury prone...

and i'm not sold on their last 30 games...It's easy to win when it means nothing...I don't think COry Clouston is the god send that everyone in Ottawa thinks he is...but, we;ll ahve to wait until next year to find out, as for now, the Sens can only work on their golf game...(alfi's actually a scratch golfer, maybe he should trade sports)...
