Despite what often gets posted here, state governments appropriate very little money, if any, for scientific research.

I long for the days when the Steelers were great enough that they could refuse to even look at the castaways from other teams.

It's all good Doc...I respect you as one of the Top 3 posters on FN and I apologize also for my bile also--it does not serve to advance the debate. I'm still not sure where I stand on all this union business, but the points that the athletes present as enumerated by Harley a few days ago, well, I just couldn't find myself disagreeing with them. It really is a sticky issue and it will be very interesting to see how this all plays out. I myself cannot wait!

If I may respond to these:

1,2,3: Suppose their job is to play football. As these currently stand, the NCAA also REQUIRES that they be students in order to play football. It is not unreasonable, and is in fact EXPECTED, for a business to pay such expenses for its employees.

4,5,6: Let's think of the players as long-term contract employees to a company (the colleges). Is it unreasonable for companies to provide living expenses ABOVE AND BEYOND THE SALARIES to their employees. I have been in this situation and this is I exactly what my employer did for me long-term.

7: Since a major portion of what the players are offering to their employer is their bodies, it is in the best interests of the employer that their employees eat healthy and together to promote camaraderie amongst their employees. Doesn't the NFL also does this to a large extent.

8,9,10: You have got to be kidding with this one. HAVE YOU EVER TRAVELLED for your employer? Did you have to pay for the meals and lodging out of your own pocket on a business trip? Didn't think so.

11,12: That's not the employer providing this. Why are you even bringing it up? Professional athletes also receive these benefits.

13,14: Clutching at straws here. How can the college have a sports team without coaches? Don't professional players also get paid outrageous salaries without having to kick in for their coaches salaries?

15: Is this not also in the interest of the employer just as much as the employee? Don't film studios also promote their actors for Golden Globes and Oscars? Do the studios charge the actors for this service?

16: OK..I'll give you this ONE--but even then, look at Number 15.
