I am cleared to lift weights and train in karate so I don't see why not the numbness definately affects the feel, but I suck anyway, so no biggie now I have an excuse sucks getting back into shape, though
yeah, my dad had it in the early 80s, they went through the back of the neck through the front is actually less invasive I was home the same day as the surgery, no collar, although I will set off metal detectors
the doc says it could take months, nerves grow very slowly at least the damage was arrested, the numbness is annoying, like coming out of novacain, 50% +/- feeling, and tingling <waits for Chris Matthews jokes>
no doubt probably had the disc issue in my neck for years, and only agravated it training. Considering what is involved, (google anterior cervical discectomy and fusion) I was shocked that I had very little post op pain, and was able to drive in a few days
Going to re-side the casa this summer, so my vacation time will be taken up with that, although we are renting a beach house in Scituate, better than the Cape, less cost, far less traffic, great beach, and awesome fishing
life isn't too bad, had disc surgery back in march, went stunningly well, only had to take pain meds for a couple of days, finally able to lift and train. looking forward to summer
take care

here's what the miracle of modern medicine involves
no pain in the neck, just a numb finger and thumb on the right side
