"...there is no indication the Devils and Ilya Kovalchuk have figured out how to maximize his effectiveness on a team that seems chemistry-free whenever the soloist is on the ice."
Haha...."the soloist" Great quote. I'm gonna use that one.
Very good point. I actually blame Lamoriello for these dumb contracts, but Kovalchuk's deal finally sunk the already sinking ship. (not him, his deal) I was more arguing the fact that he isn't worth it and he isn't a winner, just an exciting player. Can you imagine the private thoughts of his teammates right now? He handcuffed the team and they are winless playing 15 guys on their bench. Crosby took a smaller contract for the good of his team and then he goes and wins a cup. Love him or hate him, that was for the good of the team. That is the kind of guy you want in a locker room. There has to be a wierd feeling in their locker room right now. If he had any team aspirations and not just individual ones, he would have not handcuffed his team like this. He made it very clear this summer that he wanted the biggest contract ever, even if it put a team in this situation. As a result, potentially losing Parise, having to move others this year to get under the cap, etc. If he gave a crap about his team or wanted his team to win would he "demand" such things knowing the consequences? Now they lost draft picks after the fact. Of course if he single-handedly leads his team to the cup then I will eat my words. I highly doubt it because even Gretzky and Lemieux didn't win it alone and a Gretzky or Lemieux he is NOT.
I hope he proves me wrong, but I have little faith at this point. He's been in the league 9 years and will be 28 years old soon. He has 4, maybe 5 years until he starts the downside of his career if everything goes well for him. Others start their decline in their early 30's definitely by 35. Does that warrant a 17 year, or even a 15 year contract? The teams that win Stanley Cups, more often than not, do it on the backs of the young superstars (Crosby, Malkin, Kane, Toews) Look at the last 15 years.
"We know we have a good team, but we have to play together or we're not going to do jack," said Elias.
How do you play together when Kovy selfishly consumes the entire salary cap and eats the future of the organization for dessert? Not only is he an overpaid one-way player, he is a proven loser. He hasn't won anything but individual awards his whole career. This move dismantled one of the best teams of the last 20 years. It will be at least another 15 until this team becomes relevent again. All the draft picks lost and the inevitable loss of Parise and others....Can't really blame Kovy though, if someone told me they'd pay me 10x what I'm worth I wouldn't tell them no either.
